Why not Northwestern? Do you think that the Northwestern campus itself is not safe or are you concerned about students going off-campus into Chicago on the weekend?

Look at the increase in crime lately. Data speaks.
Migrants have been bussed to Evanston and Wilmette ; tent cities/homelessness everywhere

Data shows that migrants are responsible for less crime than Americans. I feel pretty confident in guessing the people robbing UofC kids are Americans.

They are. Also, the neighborhood population that includes the robbers has been deeply hostile to a migrant shelter that was established on the south side. The migrants are definitely not the problem.

I fear my DD going off campus and accidentally getting into a bad area without her knowledge. I am more comfortable with Penn (not that she is likely to get in) as I know Philly very well and could educate her on where she can and cannot go.

This is such a ridiculous post. Same with the one alleging there are tent cities in Evanston and Willamette. Get off right wing media.

Police officer was murdered near campus last night.

Don’t send your children to college in this lawless city.

How far from NU campus would a student need to go before getting into a bad area?

Quite far. the NU campus and downtown Evanston in general is not terribly dangerous. Much safer than Hyde Park.

Is the crime worse in DC or the same? I'm afraid to drive to certain parts of town and no longer wear Canada Goose.

Saying UChicago is in Hyde Park is really misleading. Half the campus is in Woodlawn. And you have to ride the bus, train, and walk around with residents of the exponentially more lawless neighboring neighborhoods.

No. This did not happen near campus. The media is staging there bc he was, per the Chicago news, taken to the UChicago Emergency Room.

My family who live there say many areas are quite safe, and the ones that aren't, aren't.

Like any big city, avoid the bad areas.

Unfortunately, a lot of this is just a natural consequence of Illinois recent no bail/no jail law for most violent crimes or precursor crimes like tresspassing. Google "Illinois purge law"

If you’re scared of UChicago’s location, then don’t attend. Tired of seeing the same post over again.

Yes, so lawless. Typing this from my 4m home in the city. You do know that millions of people choose to live here, right?

PP. I wasn't trying to mislead anyone. I thought my post made it clear that UChicago is not in a safe area. And yes, the public transportation is in an even worse area. I don't even like get off the Kennedy down there during daylight hours. Hence my statement that Evanston/NU is much safer.

If you are seriously considering, make sure you get access so you can see the sheer number of urgent security alerts that go out every single day.

And if you are set on sending your kid here:
Make sure you hire security for them to follow them around. I’m not kidding.
Parents have pooled together to hire their own Security/drivers etc.

When? Where? This sounds like a lie.

Parents are doing this at Berkeley.

There’s a PI agency everyone in Chicago uses for security. And there are some national companies as well.

They typically do an on /off rotation and will be parked outside the dorm and just follow your kid around after hours.

The scariest part of this incident was that it happened during the day.

If parents are worried enough about crime to hire protection for their children, why do they send their kids there?

UChicago boosters are absolutely trying to mislead people when they bend over backwards to talk about how safe Hyde Park is, while purposely omitting mention of Woodlawn and the other neighboring communities. And frankly, Hyde Park isn’t even safe.
