University of Richmond thoughts

Huge endowment. Nice facilities. Loyal alumni network. Strong on-campus recruiting. High starting and mid career salaries. Attractive students. Beautiful campus with city access. What's not to love?

I guess I did not find it beautiful and the campus seemed disjointed to me. The cement area in front of the cafeteria seemed to function as the main quad, which I thought was random. The dorm room we saw was dark and depressing. The school doesn’t seem to have much spirit (sports events don’t seem to draw much attention). And our tour was so business focused.

Middle 50 percent of enrolled class has unweighted 3.84 to 4.0 and SAT of 1460 to 1530. Hardly of class made up of B or C students. I say this someone with no affiliation with the school.

Only 20% submit SAT scores and middle 50 is 1510 to 1430. Good, but the 20% puts it in perspective.

I took a hard look at Richmond for my son. He wants to go to law school. The Richmond kids generally go to very unimpressive law schools. Very very few go to top 40 schools. Extremely rare for someone to go to a top 15. Kids at Furman and Sewanee go to far better schools. See more of them at Duke or Vanderbilt or UVA. Incoming stats are meaningless. It’s where they go when they leave that matters to me.

And the stats to support this argument come from where?

Many of the top law schools list the undergrad schools for incoming students. Rarely do you see Richmond. Furman and Sewanee show up all the time. Those schools also provide detailed break downs of law school placements. Super impressive. Richmond was far less forthcoming with data but what little I got from them showed their places was very poor by comparison.

Not surprised.

Richmond is more of a social / Greek scene school.

More of a capital of the Confederacy scene school.

Actually, UR isn't southern at all. Weird that it's not, but it's not, at all.

And it's not popular in the South either. I had to laugh when I saw that Maryland was included in their "South" numbers to boost the still-low percentage from the region.

Oh wow he goes there? I thought he’d grown up and gotten a job.

I agree. We toured a lot of schools. All of us like UR by far the least. Boring campus. Nothing going on. Buildings nothing special. Kids seemed preppy and entitled. Mediocre academic reputation. I would never send my kids here.

My daughter had the same reaction! What a waste of a trip. At least we got to see W&M, which was since. Richmond is a “niche” school for New Jersey lax bros and sorority girls.

Ha! It’s definitely Jersey Shore. Snooki and Mike the Situation would both feel right at home.

As are UVA and W&M.

I MIGHT let my kid go here if they were getting a full ride and had no better options, but at $88k a year - you have to be kidding me! Even if money is no object, it’s not worth more than a flagship state school. My guess is it’s all mediocre rich kids who can’t go anywhere else.

The incoming student stats tell a much different story. Sorry your kid didn't get in.

Our college counselor told us the same thing. It would have been a safety for my son. She told us not to bother with it.

Everyone knows those stats are fuzzy math. Very few kids reporting sat and act scores. Inflated GPAs from high schools. The “stats” are meaningless. This is not a serious academic institution.

We toured but my son didn’t apply. Not impressed.
