If they are kindergarten, sure dicey. But age 8 is 100% home alone.

16 years old and older may be ready to be left unsupervised overnight for one to two days, with a plan in place.

Arlington doesn’t have the same laws.

They aren't laws, even in Fairfax. They are guidelines only, with no teeth. And they are written for idiot parents who are incapable of judging their own child's abilities.

Not really. It's a fraemwork established so noncompliant parents (ie bad ones) can be punished for not following them. Think custody disputes, security clearances, etc.

In Arlington, I think the guidelines instruct parents to consider any medical, emotional, or maturity issues when it comes to leaving kids alone. It could be a cognitive issue, or it could just be a kid who has a track record of not being responsible when left alone.

I think this is likely, because the timing of the storm mean they may need to make a call before much snow falls. So even if we just get a dusting (which would stick to untreated roads, given the temps)— or only flurries— we likely won’t know that until it’s too late.
