I read the book but have an awful memory, so I spent half the movie thinking “I swear he was with his wife in the book…?” So I went googling after. According to Sam Esmail, the reason they made the wife/daughter switch was to highlight the generational change in how two people might react to this same situation. For people who did or didn’t like it, I’m curious whether you’ve seen other Sam Esmail projects and whether that makes a difference? I didn’t love it (though thought the ending was actually much closer to closure than the book!) but also thought it was more or less what I expected after Mr Robot and Homecoming. |
Ok, I don't mean to be rude, but I don't think you were watching very closely. Hawke's character never makes it back to town. He drives by a farm stand, stops to speak to the Spanish speaking lady, then the drone with the flyers flies over and he races back to the house. The area they are in is a vacation area with homes set far apart. Ali says most people won't be around at this time of year and also notes that his neighbors are a few miles down the road. The house is trashed because a plan has crashed nearby, but I do agree that planes crashing are very loud and that they would have heard this from even a few miles away. The isolation theme was intentional. |
| I was so disappointed by this terrible movie. |
| I think the people who are "so disappointed by this terrible movie" have no imagination or critical thinking skills. |
| Does anyone who speaks Spanish know what the woman on the side of the road says to Ethan Hawke? I tried using google translate microphone but all it said was “can I use your phone” and I know she said something else. |
| I found the movie creepy AF. I thought it was good because I could see how you could execute it. Literally how many of us can drive a car without Google maps in a town we are visiting? I'd have no idea. Only my military husband probably paid attention enough to drive without a map. |
It just wasn’t good. Maybe if they cut out about 30 or 40 minutes of it |
This is PP. I went back and rewatched those scenes. Julia, her kids and the adult daughter are lounging by the pool while “a few miles down the road” there are airplanes crashing into the beach. Yet, there’s hardly any noise outside. Again, not realistic. |
IIRC, she was saying that she was scared and she needed to get back home. And she saw a plane with red stuff coming down. And she was basically begging him to help her because she was terrified of what was going on. |
| Um best part might be that the movie triggered Elon Musk lol!! https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/elon-musk-leave-the-world-behind-netflix-b2463100.html |
She's begging for a ride home because she got really lost and he's the first guy she's seen all day and a plane was flying erratically and she speculates they may be under a chemical attack and if she can use a phone and as he drives off she begs him to take her with him |
LOL. Sorry you’re so simple that you liked this trash movie. I’ll bet you liked the last few seasons of GoT, too. |
| I just finished and maybe it had the benefit of low expectations from this thread but it was amazing! I loved every moment, except some tense parts punctuated by creepy violin music. It was interesting seeing how the characters processed their emotions and coming to grips being with each other and what happens around them. It was a little terrifying at moments and I'm wary of how dependent we are on satellites. |
THIS. Don’t forget: “Never trust white people.” 🤮 |
+1 Give me a Kevin Bacon (character) or Daryl Dixon any day. |
