In the book, both were in their 60s, if I remember. Ok, make them both Ali’s age, I guess that’s fine. Instead, they replace her with a 20 year old. Middle aged Julia Roberts gets to be in the film, but they needed to rewrite the older black lady. Got it.

Ooooh, that is irritating. And explains why that storyline was clunky.

+1 the character of the daughter was a waste of space and seems the son was cast for his looks not his acting chops.

Agree. The daughter of Mahershala Ali’s character was probably the worst actress of the bunch, or maybe she got the worst lines or worst direction. She sucked.

It would've been infinitely more interesting if that had been the wife instead. Did they switch to the daughter because they needed cheap sex appeal to sell the movie? Either way, a disappointing call.

Ethan Hawke in a Bikini Kill shirt is amazing.

I looked up the girl because that had to be nepotism. Yep.

Julia Roberts sucks. She was just ok when younger in vapid movies. She has not grown into an actress. She’s just tired looking and ruined the movie.

I liked Ethan Hawke and Julia Roberts together. Mahershala Ali was great as usual.

It was a bit preachy in the end, but I liked how they unspooled the story so you didn't know right away what they were dealing with. I found it a somewhat realistic portrayal of near future dangers.

We liked the movie too. I'm also surprised at all these negative reviews.

+1 Couldn't stand that actress/her performance.

Terrible. Stopped in halfway though and have no desire to finish. I did like some of the visuals though.

Omg - yes - the movie started bad, then was ok (with some cringey parts) but what the hell was with the ending? Did they run out of money and just stop filming?

The book ends abruptly too. You can probably read it faster than you can watch the movie.

I think it's more like she really needed the paycheck (do these spend all their money as soon as it flows in?) and phoned it in for this role. It's so clear that she did not give a f**k and only joined this movie for the paycheck.

Now compare that to how Julia Roberts performed as the evil stepmother in "Mirror Mirror" (the only live action Snow White movie I've ever liked). She ROCKED that role. Best evil stepmother of Snow White ever, IMO. Of course, that could also be because of the writing, the script and the direction. All three of which were complete trash in this movie.

I haven’t read the book but Julia Robert’s character is so unlikable it’s hard to watch.

She was meant to be unlikable

I didn’t think it was a total waste but the ending was really goofy.

I agree with the criticisms of two of the young actors. Otherwise I thought it was okay. I didn't love it, but it interested me enough to finish it.

I figured that, but it is so over the top that it ruins the film for me.
