Public education is a shitshow. Not because of the pandemic. Because we have degraded it at every step over the last 30 years. The pandemic just showed the cracks to the average parent who had previously stuck his head in the sand. |
Literally no one said everything is fine. Go find a new battle, hoss. |
A big help would be for parents to enforce discipline with their kids. And have some respect for teachers. |
Yes, it was a novel virus. But kids were kept out of school so that older people could go to restaurants and bars - it's as simple as that. As my mother said, "It's more important for people my age to be able to go places than kids to go to school because we don't have as much time left." Really?! |
Then give us some suggestions for how to make things better that don't include doing the same thing we have always done. |
It was crystal clear by the summer of 2020 that the people becoming severely ill and/or dying from Covid were the elderly and those with compromised immune systems or underlying heart or respiratory issues. There was zero evidence of young children suffering adverse effects (and obviously we are talking statistically significant- there are always outliers). |
Me? I’m a parent. I’m supporting our public schools/teachers. You can start by respecting and listening to teachers. Get involved in the school system. Support additional taxes to fund tutoring, extra specialists, etc. It doesn’t just magically happen. |
Too much to ask of those who prioritize national politics over the education of their own children. |
No, it wasn’t “crystal clear”. Because kids weren’t back in schools at that point. Obviously vaccines weren’t available. And rapid testing wasn’t accessible until that fall. We were in much different place in August 2020. |
First up, stop attacking schools/teachers. Start respecting and listening to teachers. Get involved in the school system. Support additional taxes to fund tutoring, extra specialists, etc. It doesn’t just magically happen. |
Let it good, sweets. Nobody takes orders from you. |
Different PP: It was indeed "crystal clear by the summer of 2020 that the people becoming severely ill and/or dying from Covid were the elderly and those with compromised immune systems or underlying heart or respiratory issues." In terms of schools, it was crystal clear by october 2020 that you could safely open schools. Several states did so. |
So you are a teacher, is that why you're hyper defensive? |
Become a substitute teacher. They are desperately needed and you can see up-close how a lot of the problems stem from total disrespect for teachers from parents and students. |
There was not enough teachers and daycare workers to reopen.
The average age of a worker at our daycare went down by probably 7 years post-COVID. Every little old lady teacher and caregiver decided to retire. They were not getting paid a lot, lived modestly, but were not willing to die to educate or care for your kids. My sister's kids went to a preschool at a church in NC. Big time anti-vaxxer rural area. The church had to shut the preschool for a few months because something like 65%+ of the preschool staff were old ladies who were previously SAHMs. They did not want COVID from those kids and finally retired for good. Hindsight blah blah blah. It's the truth. |
