NYT and school closures

The editorial board of the NYT put out an opinion column acknowledging the profound learning loss caused by COVID-related school closures.

The evidence is now in, and it is startling. The school closures that took 50 million children out of classrooms at the start of the pandemic may prove to be the most damaging disruption in the history of American education. It also set student progress in math and reading back by two decades and widened the achievement gap that separates poor and wealthy children.

Amazing took NYT until 2023 to recognize what anyone with a couple of brain cells knew in 2021.

Never should have shut down the schools. No need. Fauci and Weingarten did so much harm, but are revered by many.

Ok. To some of us this was obvious from the get-go. Now go apologize to Ron DeSantis.

Virtually no one is surprised by this. Some of us, however, get that schools were closed in an effort to reduce lives and illnesses in the face of an unprecedented (at least in our lifetime) pandemic. Obviously people can differ in their opinions regarding the success and the costs of these efforts.

+1 I'm so tired of hearing about this

I have yet to see an article that says it was all worth it. What opinion supports the success of the efforts that were in place?

I will never understand this. You are tired of hearing evidence that the consequences of school closures are greater than are currently acknowledged by politicians and educators? Why? Shouldn't we want data showing how school closures affected students?

This will be the excuse for at least the next thirty years.

The “kids are resilient” crew should be surprised by this news since they kept insisting that since kids are soooo resilient, prolonged closures would have little impact. They were wrong. Many of us *did* know what a disaster those policies would be, and frankly, this “no one is surprised” reaction is disingenuous, at best.

We are not going to put Dr Fauci, etc. on trial and send them to prison. Sorry if this is not what you want to hear.

Why? More people there died and he still has terrible results.

Apparently the answer for a lot of people is “no.”

Too little too late - NYT was on the front lines of advocating school closures.
