LOL ! There is no such thing as "progressive AND tolerant". Maybe the poster meant: Progressive and self-righteous.

You sound like a bastion of tolerance yourself.

At first I was surprised that someone would consider Davidson in the same breath as Amherst. But a quick look at admissions stats does indicate that the gap is narrowing. Davidson had a 14% acceptance rate w/a record number of applications this past year -- numbers that would have been comparable to what Amherst reported in 2017.

Not necessarily-Colby, Bates and Hamilton have low admit rates. Competitive applicants for Amherst are likely in the mix for Williams,Swat, and Bowdoin.

For what it's worth, the new WSJ college rankings were released today. Davidson ranked quite well at #30 just ahead of #31 Williams and #41 Haverford. The top LAC was Amherst at #8. Top overall were Princeton, MIT, Yale, Stanford and Columbia followed by Harvard #6 and UPenn #7.

How about fraternities who welcome gay men? Assuming those are harder to find.

Now we’re really getting into Greek culture!

Davidson parent here. I know that the eating houses are welcoming of trans female students.

He has zero interest in most other SLACs---would not be caught dead at Haverford (aunt went there). Other interests are Richmond, WF, UVA (plus safeties).

He’d like Washington & Lee and U. Richmond, too. Maybe also Colgate and Bucknell.

can someone talk about Davidson vs BC? I've been to BC but won't get to Davidson. They look a bit similar on paper?

Also, I wouldn't want my daughter choosing a school in large part because a boyfriend was nearby. No parent wants their child to be unhappy at college, and this comes through in the mom's post yesterday stating why Amherst hasn't been the greatest experience for her daughter.

Dc area kids are more southern than northeastern at heart (unless they are Jewish or Asian)

I can totally see the median dc kid just liking SEC or sec adjacent schools to nescac.

There is a huge difference between the outlook of philly and tri state kids vs dc kids

The data disagrees with you on that.

This does not describe my MD kid or any of her friends.

Someone growing up in Bethesda is unlikely to feel comfortable in a classic southern setting.

Unless they are classy, warm, kind, and fun loving.

Exactly! If you are typical arrogant Bethesda a-hole, definitely will not fit in the South.

They may not be comfortable with the support for guns and Trump (let alone the Confederate flag). They may miss lots of healthy food options. Surrounding communities may be less tolerant of diversity, both racial and LGBTQ+. Read some survey results if you are not aware of the cultural differences that exist between different regions of the US. It has nothing to do with being snobby or "classy." It has to do with being progressive and tolerant (which overlap a lot with warm, kind and educated).

Your description/opinion of the south in 2023 is about as meaningful as if I thought all of New England were like a Stephen King novel.

That is seriously seriously racist.

It might be inaccurate sociology, but I don’t think it’s racist.

Not everyone
Speak for yourself
And Philly and the tristate area are not representative of the “northeast” as a whole. Such a bizarre and provincial thing to say.

Davidson or Dickinson?
