Thoughts on Davidson?

it seems like a wonderful school with strong academics but doesn’t seem to place well in nyc/dc like Nescacs/swat/haverford etc?

Do most Davidson kids just stick around the south east after graduation?

Choose based upon the quality of the education and fit for your child

NOT the fame of the students who came before, for God’s sake!

Also, I wouldn't want my daughter choosing a school in large part because a boyfriend was nearby. No parent wants their child to be unhappy at college, and this comes through in the mom's post yesterday stating why Amherst hasn't been the greatest experience for her daughter.

Dc area kids are more southern than northeastern at heart (unless they are Jewish or Asian)

I can totally see the median dc kid just liking SEC or sec adjacent schools to nescac.

There is a huge difference between the outlook of philly and tri state kids vs dc kids

The data disagrees with you on that.

That is seriously seriously racist.

I know off topic but is she still with her HS boyfriend who was going to college in Charlotte? I followed your thread from last year and was curious how that worked out.

Thanks for asking. They split amicably and still talk to each other regularly. It was difficult for my daughter initially since he rebounded quickly and was seeing someone within a couple months. However, she started to see someone who is on the crew team with her towards the end of spring semester. She seems pretty excited to catch up with him this weekend.

This does not describe my MD kid or any of her friends.

Someone growing up in Bethesda is unlikely to feel comfortable in a classic southern setting.

Unless they are classy, warm, kind, and fun loving.

Not surprised with the outcome of the relationship. It's usually not a good idea to follow a boyfriend/girlfriend to college but in this case it might have been. From what PP told us about her daughter, she likely would have been far happier at Davidson which flies in the same rarefied air as Amherst in my book.

They may not be comfortable with the support for guns and Trump (let alone the Confederate flag). They may miss lots of healthy food options. Surrounding communities may be less tolerant of diversity, both racial and LGBTQ+. Read some survey results if you are not aware of the cultural differences that exist between different regions of the US. It has nothing to do with being snobby or "classy." It has to do with being progressive and tolerant (which overlap a lot with warm, kind and educated).

At first I was surprised that someone would consider Davidson in the same breath as Amherst. But a quick look at admissions stats does indicate that the gap is narrowing. Davidson had a 14% acceptance rate w/a record number of applications this past year -- numbers that would have been comparable to what Amherst reported in 2017.

You gotta love “progressive AND tolerant.”

+1

LOL ! There is no such thing as "progressive AND tolerant". Maybe the poster meant: Progressive and self-righteous.

OP has your daughter decided to apply ED to Davidson?
