Thoughts on Davidson?

I visited Davidson with DC expecting something more akin to Richmond or W&L but in fact found it very much like a Haverford culturally. Everyone had their pronouns, there was a very visible LGBTQ presence (signs for events). Perhaps it still has some affiliation with its southern prep roots but it seemed A LOT like a typical New England LAC that leans left. I was quite surprised to be honest.

I think the parents are more afraid than the kids šŸ˜‰

They really are. To say that they’d stay away from a place like davidson because it has Greek life is crazy.

OP unless she’s going to a big southern school, she will have a perfectly normal experience most anywhere else even if there are Greeks there. I’m pretty sure at davidson it’s not a competitive rush situation, at least the eating houses are not.

OP recommend strongly that your daughter do an overnight at Davidson and Haverford if she knows a current student. My daughter did overnights at her top schools once she was admitted, and those experiences helped tremendously in narrowing down her choices.

As an aside, she applied to Davidson and would have gone there in a heartbeat had she been accepted. She visited a former HS teammate who plays for Davidson and came home enamored with the place and its students. Beautiful campus in a great location outside Charlotte with great climate. She told us that Davidson also has a separate recreational Lake Campus on Lake Norman with a private beach for students! She described it as a work hard party fun (vs. hard) environment where you can have fun without being a drinker.

Do the women in eating houses eat most of their meals just with the women in the eating house? Where do the men eat?

UNC Asheville appears closer to Haverford than Davidson. Davidson, Richmond, Bucknell and W&L seem like "one group". Haverford, Swat, Wes and Oberlin another.

Many people are not "afraid" of greek culture. They just don't like it.

Some schools have a policy whereby all events must be open to all students.

At such places, you don't have to "try out" (or pay dues) to be someone's friend.

Different mindset.

But my question is this, how do they know enough about it to not ā€œlikeā€ before even stepping on campus? I suspect a combination of social media and parents opinions. I’d really hope that girls realize that ā€œbama rushā€ type stuff doesn’t exemplify 99% of campus sorority life. I don’t care what other people’s kids do but to rule out a school like davidson is just ludicrous

The future is here.

You need to understand that your ilk is a dinosaur.

Catch up or you will be left behind.

+1 same as in many workplaces. You may not like it but this is not atypical

PP here with daughter in an eating house. Members of eating houses can and do bring occasional guests but usually lunch and dinner are with the women in the eating house. The eating houses don't serve breakfast and any meals on weekends (incl Fri dinner). For breakfast and weekend meals, she will eat with everyone else in Commons or use dining dollars at Union/Wildcat Den, Qdoba or Summit Coffee or go off campus to eat. Students pay extra for eating houses and then combine that with one of the less expensive college meal plans. My daughter is signed up for the lowest cost college dining plan (2 meals/week + $400 dining dollars that can be used anywhere on campus including a big discount if used at Commons). Her dorm room this year has a full kitchen--she will be living in a 5 bedroom suite with 4 other friends. BTW only 2 of her roommates are in her eating house while one is not a member of any. She usually grabs a quick breakfast in her room rather than use one of her precious meal swipes. That combination (eating house + minimum dining plan + groceries) saves us money vs. the unlimited dining plan.

The men who are in fraternities eat lunch and dinner during the week at the frats like the eating houses. However, 75% of men and many of the athletes are not members of any frat. According to my daughter, most male athletes will eat the majority of their meals in Commons. Davidson's open campus party policy makes a big difference in the social scene compared with schools like Wake Forest or Colgate.

Ha. Nope. And I guarantee I'm younger than you are. It's a political thing, not an identity thing. Literally none of my group from college, childhood, work.... no one uses pronouns.

That's for the cringey losers. It gives them something to belong to because they couldn't fit in anywhere else.

You keep being a loser and I'll keep being normal.

I am the poster quoted by you.

Disagree. Childish fad. Bunch of weirdos with too little on their minds besides the trendy political correctness of the day.

Davidson does lean liberal like most colleges and is still affiliated with the more progressive Presbyterian Church (USA). The new college president Doug Hicks is an alum and ordained minister. The college has signed on to the UChicago principles on free speech, and there is a greater tolerance of dissenting opinions on campus than you may find in other SLACs.

How do you not use pronouns? How do people refer to you without pronouns?

Yes, you sound really normal - ranting and insulting strangers on anonymous board. Lol.
