Visit the African American history museum in DC. You have A LOT to learn about slavery and its effects on black people in this country.

The “legacies” part is really important. The U.S. basically had an Apartheid system for a hundred years after slavery ended. And even after federal laws were changed in the 1950s and 1969s to no longer allow legalized discrimination, there was massive resistance to integration and other efforts to afford equal rights and dignity to Black people. Much of the machinery that functioned to relegate Black people to second-class status continues to operate today, which is why segregation persists across neighborhoods and schools to this day and why we see continued racial disparities in economic opportunity, criminal punishment, and other key aspects of American life.

Why not both? If anything, the backlash from neo-Confederates against even the "lowest hanging fruit" should underscore how politically difficult it is to dismantle systemic racism and effect real change. Not that that's an excuse. But our public officials should keep pushing forward on all fronts; progress on one doesn't imply lack of effort on others.

I'm 58 and my local school wasn't desegregated until I started first grade. Even then plenty of kids were sent to the local
"segregation academy" rather than attend school with African American kids. My mom's 83 year old neighbor (an African American woman) in this same town is mostly illiterate and had to work multiple low paying, low killed jobs to support her family during her lifetime, and is now living off of a pittance of social security. Anyone who thinks the legacy of slavery and systemic racism isn't affecting anyone today is woefully oblivious.
