Allowing 12yo to celebrate with small glass of champagne?

No one is allowed to drink alcoholic beverages until age 21. Period.

OP I am the Italian who wrote earlier. I think it’s wrong/crazy to make such a a big deal about a small glass of champagne. But if you/DCUM stress so much about it, why not just cheer with Fanta for everyone? There is no need to drink for you or your husband either… if anything, it’s probably bad for you anyway.

That the family enjoys a toast and a celebration together?

So you're teaching them that they can only celebrate if there's alcohol?

Yes. Clearly the message is the absolute only way to celebrate is with alcohol.

They why can't they toast with a drink appropriate for 12 yo child? Its not as if they can't participate without the champagne. Some of you have really let alcohol culture get in your head.

I don’t think it’s ridiculous. It’s not ridiculous at all in Europe! We are Jewish and recently started allowing our 13yo to partake in wine during Seder. Feel free to judge me to feel better about your rigid parenting.

This post completely changed my answer from hard no to a yes.

12, no.

14 is about when I’d think about that.

It's been a long day and I'm too tired to explain it.

Different rules if you are Jewish. Much less likely to develop alcoholism.

They should have a glass of cider for toasting, but let the kid try the champagne. They probably won’t even like it. My kids have tried it and think it’s gross. Once and done. They have never asked to try it again. It does not make them alcoholics. Make something off limits and telling them it’s bad will make them want to try it even more. My parents also let me try alcohol at about the same age. I rarely drink. I just don’t like it. Now, that is good parenting!
