Duke or Brown? Engineering and history.

Isn’t duke still like 99% Greek life southern magnet school. If that’s her thing, go for it. Great launchpad for a career in the southeast or Texas.

Brown is more diverse, cosmopolitan student body. Better academic reputation as well. Smaller overall school, great launchpad for a northeast career.

WTF are you talking? Duke to Texas??

Duke graduates go to DC or NYCarea.

Check the map.

Dies your kid like watching sports and want a school with a lot of spirit in the traditional sense of the word (Duke)? Does your kid get really stressed about school and therefore would benefit from Brown's more lax grading policy?

Both are great schools but they are super different.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Crunchy/granola versus preppy. Which does she prefer? Both are great schools, but totally different.

You think Brown is “crunch granola”?

You have obviously never been there.

I went there. It's not Reed, but Brown will definitely more crunchy/less preppy than Duke. Also much smaller Greek scene. So it really depends what your kid wants.

Agree,
brown is pretty liberal and political. If that’s appealing from a History Class or major angle, maybe OP and her child prefer that.

Duke is plenty diverse.

51.2% of students identified as white, 12.7% identified as Hispanic/Latinx, 8.8% identified as Black, 0.8% identified as Native American or Alaska Native, 39.7% identified as Asian, 0.8% identified as Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander and 1.7% identified as other

Between Brown and Duke, well... it seems like you'll have a humanities major... .

Duke is still #16, T20 for undergraduate engineering, and it's T10 for overall undergraduate education.

My choice is Duke.

What programs at Duke are top ten? There must be quite a few, since it’s ranked so highly.

Since some people were interested in getting an update: DD returned and decided to commit to Duke! She loved her visit and is extremely excited to be a Duke student for the next 4 years! Thanks for all the information about both schools too, it was relayed to DD and she considered many of the thoughts you all shared on here!

Sorry, what % of the undergrad student body responded to this survey? Hope it’s a statistically significant amount. It should be, they have awesome school spirit!

Congrats to your DD! She seems a very wise young lady and will be successful!

Congrats to you DD! What were the factors that swayed her to Duke ? Curious since navy of these schools are on my DD’s list to tour in the coming year. She is interested in CS with a double major or minor in Econ or maybe public policy

If your kid really wants engineering, why didn't she apply to MIT or CalTech? That's where hard core engineers go.

Both Duke and Brown are fine schools. Look at the weather and where she'd like to end up. There is some regional bias to all schools. The Research Triangle is a great place to live and work, so if she's interested in working there, I'd choose Duke. If she wants to be in Boston, choose Brown (it's in Providence, but is close to Boston).

Both are great schools. Congrats to your DD!!

Maybe likes engineering but not hard core engineering.

Sounds like she wanted a more well-rounded experience. OP said she already turned down Cornell and Georgia Tech which have heavy engineering focus, and she didn't seem to consider them as strongly. It looks like she was deciding mostly between UPenn and Brown, both of which are more well-rounded and not major engineering research schools. Then getting off the Duke waitlist and committing there, she again went for another well-rounded option, seems like she values strength in many disciplines. OP congrats to your daughter she'll do amazing things at Duke, she's clearly talented and a hard-worker based on her results alone!

Thank you! DD was swayed to Duke because she liked the vibrancy of the campus and students. She took pictures while visiting and Duke is absolutely gorgeous, and people seem to spend a lot of time outside which she liked. The gardens at Duke are also an incredible asset to have on campus, she said it was breathtaking! She liked how curious and engaged the students she talked with were - it definitely dispelled any thoughts about Duke only being a pre-professional school. She also was able to speak with kids who were involved with a variety of undergraduate research endeavors and engineering projects on campus which she liked! She overall feels Duke will set her up well and let her have a fruitful and balanced college experience!
