If your kid really wants engineering, why didn't she apply to MIT or CalTech? That's where hard core engineers go. Both Duke and Brown are fine schools. Look at the weather and where she'd like to end up. There is some regional bias to all schools. The Research Triangle is a great place to live and work, so if she's interested in working there, I'd choose Duke. If she wants to be in Boston, choose Brown (it's in Providence, but is close to Boston). Both are great schools. Congrats to your DD!!
Sounds like she wanted a more well-rounded experience. OP said she already turned down Cornell and Georgia Tech which have heavy engineering focus, and she didn't seem to consider them as strongly. It looks like she was deciding mostly between UPenn and Brown, both of which are more well-rounded and not major engineering research schools. Then getting off the Duke waitlist and committing there, she again went for another well-rounded option, seems like she values strength in many disciplines. OP congrats to your daughter she'll do amazing things at Duke, she's clearly talented and a hard-worker based on her results alone!
