Gosh, Outdoor Lab is one of the best experiences my autistic kid has had at APS. One of the best experiences that made them feel kind of normal. I'm sorry this happened but I really hope it doesn't affect the program, which has been huge for my kid. We have done the summer camp also. It's just fantastic and the staff there is amazing. |
I agree APS should keep it. I grew up in another state but we did a long weekend camping trip to a summer camp type place in 5th grade. |
Except all teachers I know love outdoor lab. |
Everyone freaking about shutting down the outdoor lab when clearly the right thing to do after an incident like this is to review current policies and procedures, and implement changes as needed. I haven’t seen a single thing that says outdoor lab has been canceled indefinitely! |
I absolutely, unequivocally, wholeheartedly disagree. Actually, these students are the ones who most need and benefit from field trips. |

People aren't freaking out about it being shut down. They are defending why it should not be shut down, as one poster here keeps insisting it should be. |
Do the 5th grade teachers love an unpaid overnight job obligation? If we are going to keep this boondoggle, we should compensate teachers for their time. |
Yeah, privileged parents who can get the time off from work and have childcare for their other kids. |
or are actually a 2-parent home; or who have family who can watch other kids; or neighbors who can watch other kids; or, or, or.... Not every parent has to go. They don't require that many chaperones. |
Parents are not going to be allowed to sleep in the tent. Can you imagine the liability of 1 adult with 4 unrelated kids? Not happening. More than likely the overnights are over. |
Exactly. Most parents don't want to go. I never did. 3 kids and I never went. |
Has your kid gone?? That's exactly what they do. One parent (same sex) in a tent with 2 or 3 kids. |
100% Not true from our schools experience. Parents only stay in tent with their kid. |
Do you even have kids, or kids in school? All parent volunteers (aka chaperones, classroom assistance, whatever) have to fill out volunteer forms, watch a "training" video, and have a background check. |
