Dating a conservative

Macho man talkin' truth on women's bulletin board. MAGA!

I married a normal, non-Southern, pre-Trump conservative. Phenomenal man, really just an upstanding guy. It’s anecdotal ofc, but he treated me leagues better than any liberal man I dated did. The ones I dated still had no respect for women and some pretty vile habits, although in public they espoused politically liberal values. DH was almost shockingly egalitarian in comparison.

Depends if he's a Reagan/Bush conservative or a Trump conservative. I'm a progressive Dem married 20 years to a conservative republican, but if he would have voted for Trump, I'm not sure I could have stayed. I can deal with our different thoughts over how the federal budget should be spent, but I couldn't deal with a partner who voted for that misogynist a-hole. Fortunately my husband feels the same.

I consider myself on the populist far left. I would rather be with a free-thinking man who questions the powerful elite even if we arrive at different conclusions, rather than someone who unquestionably follows what Biden, CNN, MSNBC, the Democratic Establishment and the corporate media tells him to think.

please. Conservative men don't believe in equal housework and childcare.

I grew up in a conservative household.

Liberal men are much more aware of women's rights than conservative men, who really don't care much about women's rights.

Also, the highly educated tend to be liberal.

Totally disagree. “Conservative” can apply to a lot of different types of people. My parents are what most people here would call conservative (observant Catholics who are pro-life, don’t support gay marriage, etc) and have an equal marriage. My dad respects my mom’s career and has always been her #1 supporter, encouraged her to go back to school to get her masters, etc. He was and is an incredible, hands-on father and now grandfather. I saw this dynamic in many of the households in our social circle growing up, which was made up of highly-educated Catholics like my parents (ie conservatives).

My highly educated observant Catholic parents are not conservative at all, are pro-choice and support LGBTQ+ rights and the environment. Your Opus Dei circle does not the Church make.

That said, OP, the people saying "this can work" are pointing to examples from generations past and a time when politics was not so very polarized. Look at the women telling you "I cannot speak to my spouse anymore because he has been radicalized by Fox News" (and then for a laugh, the conservative man saying "conservative men are live and let live in relationships" because he doesn't realize terrorizing your wife into silence is not peace), because that's the current situation.

I'm having a hard time believing that a person who works in women's rights would even post this topic, though.

OMG, drama much? The idea that your garden-variety Fox-watching conservative is “terrorizing his wife into silence” is some sort of bizarre feminist fever dream. How many married people do you know? The idea that any of the married guys that I know could or would “terrorize” their wife into anything is beyond absurd.

Women's lived experience = drama. Shocking.

Are you saying *you’ve* been terrorized into silence? If not, we aren’t talking about anyone’s lived experience then, are we? The women whose husbands have gone off the Fox deep end and have posted in this thread sound like they are annoyed and pissed off, not living in fear.

I am one of the PP's whose husband has "gone off the deep end." Terrorized into silence might be an extreme way to describe my experience, but it's not too far off. When any political discussion devolves into him exploding into rage and cursing that's certainly not living in harmony. Saying we all (me and our two kids) walk on eggshells is certainly an accurate description.

I have an older female friend who is quite liberal, whose husband has gone off the deep end. She is living a nightmare. She had a stroke and is physically incapacitated, and her husband is using her physical weakness to push her into joining him. He is angry so often, ranting about liberals and illegals and Biden and ... she's afraid, and effectively silenced in her own home. She has confessed to wanting to die, rather than carry on like this, and she's only in her 60s.

Conservative here. Wrong. My mom was a doctor and my wife is a lawyer. I respect their work.

If you try to raise a daughter with a progressive partner, what do you do about your pro choice partner teaching your daughter to fight for pro choice values? There is no middle ground on this issue. You either belive you forced birther view must be imposed on everyone including your children, or you believe in choice.

Sorry, but you are so dumb. I am raising three daughters. I don't teach them to fight, at all. All three are very successful in their careers, two graduated from Ivy League schools. There is middle ground. They all have their own choices, we don't impose our choices on our daughters.

What country are you living in? They no longer have some fundamental.choices.

Don't worry, they do.

They do not. What are you talking about?

Yes. Please explain. I don’t see what you are talking about either.

I disagree, I’m very liberal.

Conservative men fix things, take care of the lawn/yard, paint rooms, fix light fixtures, do the taxes, grill, take orders when there is a party, plan tail gates, do the dishes, take their plates to the sink, set up tvs, move furniture, coach kids sports teams, help with nighttime routine (anything family), etc.

Things are equal but fall on gender norm lines.

haha .. my liberal DH does all of it, and cooks, not just grill, bakes, fixes all kinds of things (neighbors all come to him for help fixing stuff), and he's an engineer. But, I do the taxes.

Conservative men aren't doing much childcare or cooking and baking. Please.

Tail gate? LOL That's super important housework. LOL

You missed the point!

Yes conservative men to care for children but just not in the way you agree.

And southerners tailgate Friday night/Saturday and Sunday.

Grilling is cooking

You aren’t talking about conservatives you are talking about jerks. There are plenty of liberal men who can’t cut a lawn or install a light fixture.

I didn't miss the point. Conservative men mostly have traditional gender roles, and doing housechorse and childcare is a traditionally female's role. If you mean they care for their children by working, guess what.. most women work and do housechores/childcare, too.

I didn't realize Conservative only meant "southerners". LOL. I think you mean "traditional southern" people, not "conservatives". But, I'm sure you know that there are conservatives in other parts of the country, right? LOL

No taking care of children is not "traditional female roles" after men get home from work. Actually it's the opposite. Conservative men are actually very involved in care of children after they get home from work, but yes, they work so they are not involved from 9-5 but neither are working women.

Conservative is not a Monolith nor is Liberal, you are joking if you think all liberal men are doing bedtime routine 50/50. I was giving and example.

Conservative men are coaching teams, boy scouts, church groups, football games, baseball games, etc.

51% of conservatives support LGBT rights/marriage.
40% support immigration support
50% support gun control

You really have been snowed by the Trump GOP and have forgotten there is a whole group of conservative that are not them.

At this point, the right is trying to do real harm to my family. My family , like many families, includes married gay member and members that have had an abortion. Unless I want them turned into criminals from being hardworking, upstanding citizens, I need to keep these people and their abusive policies away and out of power.
