Incident on FCPS middle school bus

I am so angry and disgusted. That boy was traumatized and will never forget this. Anyone defending the girl makes me want to vomit.

Good thing someone took a video of the attack - too bad they didn’t also intervene and haul her off of him.

The people who are saying she shouldn’t be expelled. Would you feel any different if your child was the victim? If choking isn’t enough, then what is?

One child was suspended and the other was not. One child was granted a protective order. Watching the attack, the child who was strangled did not seem to be doing much to stop the attack, they were slapping away the girls hands and that is about it. The news article says that the girl had bullied this child before.

You are right, we don't know what was said before hand but I would guess that the judge asked those questions and that the school asked those questions. No one has rushed out to post "the other kid used unacceptable language."

Some kids are mean and bully other kids. It happens. The school should handle it early on but when it becomes assault, the kid who assaulted another kid should be punished. The girl was suspended. Hopefully she is not allowed on the bus, I don't think the story addresses that. They said that the boy sees her at school and that they pass each other but I don't remember it saying anything about the bus.

A child assaulting another child is serious. That 6 year old in Newport News had tried to strangle his K Teacher, was trying to whip kids on the playground, and broke the Teachers phone the very week he shot his Teacher. Not every bully or out of control kid ends up shooting someone but the behavior tends to escalate and needs to be addressed. The victim should be able to feel safe at school. The girl should be moved to a different school, preferably one where she is required to attend something to deal with her aggression.

Yes, she was punished for her actions, which were wrong.

The boy's family demanded a restraining order - a ridiculous overreaction.

Nevertheless, it's still worth understanding what happened prior to the incident.

An overreaction? Oh honey. If that were my kid, it would be an underreaction. I'd bring a metaphorical flamethrower to that place and that family.

Hopefully you don't spend time near any kids if you have rage issues.

One child violently attacking another child, and the school, bus driver and other did not intervene to keep the victim safe, does cause me rage. And if it were MY child, that would be multiplied X infinity.

This is an open and shut matter. This girl viciously attacked that kid. It's on film. Anyone familiar with domestic abuse knows that that level of personal attack -CHOKING someone- is more than a fight. More than all of the other attempts to diminish the behavior I'm reading. It's intentional, cruel, abusive, personal, and violent. And I'm absolutely disgusted by the people playing it down or excusing it.

Let me ask you this? How would you feel if it were YOUR child on the receiving end? Or if you were ok with that. How about if YOU were the victim? You'd be singing a much different tune. You'd want the perpetrator arrested and dealt with. And you'd be right.

The fact that this is a child who doled out the act is irrelevant. Her actions are a HUGE red flag. She should be IMMEDIATELY expelled and be held criminally liable up to whatever the law allows for kids that age. And she she should receive the necessary therapy that she very clearly needs.

How this was handled was not ok. This child who attacked another has not engaged in any normal behavior. And she needs to be dealt with. I'm sorry if she had underlying issues of any sort (whatever those may be, if they exist) but that is not a relevant factor in keeping other children safe from her.

If the above is "rage" to you, I can live with that. You should be ashamed to live with any other reaction.

Can you explain how you possibly think a restraining order was an overreaction? Did you watch the video? There is no way you have kids if you think that’s an overreaction. Or you have the problem kids.

I watched the video. It was terrible behavior and it was good that she was punished. Hopefully she learned her lesson.

But a restraining order is an overreaction in this scenario.

Are you fing kidding me? She choked him and even left bruising on his throat. An overreaction?!

If this was a DV situation, would you say the same thing?

Your comment is so outrageous that you have got to be a sht stirrer.

Kids get in fights in school ALL of the time. You think they should ALL be thrown out of school and charged with crimes over a single incident?

Fight assumes mutual participants. This was a violent attack by an unstable child.

A kid choked another student at our school last week. He was back in class the next day.

+1, I’ve seen it multiple times in my school as well. Sometimes they get ISS for a day.

Adults can't solve problems if they are overcome with rage - you should address your own issues with emotional regulation before dealing with kids.

The goal here is 1) keeping kids safe at school and 2) helping kids become productive members of society.

If we immediately expel every kid who makes a mistake we will struggle to achieve #2. We need discipline options that help achieve #2. Suspension + support. Maybe there is an undiagnosed issue here. Kids just don't lash out like that for no reason.

I know an IA who was threatened by a student who said he would bring in a gun and shoot her. Nothing was done and she was chastised for putting the student’s name in an email to admin.

I had an ES student tell the class he would “bring a gun to school and then they would start to take him seriously”. They spoke with him but that was it because he “didn’t have a plan”.

+2 a suspension is warranted for both/all parties participating in a FIGHT. Throwing punches and kicking and stuff on BOTH/ALL sides. But this wasn’t a FIGHT - it was an attack. Same as a random person punching a stranger on the street. But I guess we don’t prosecute for that nowadays either so …

Why are we as a community okay with this happening? Why as parents and teachers are we allowing this insanity to happen in our schools? Why are we okay with this? When will it end?

This girl should not be allowed on the bus anymore, and shouldn't even be allowed at the same school. I'm so sick of these schools not doing anything to the kids doing these types of things, and making the victims jump through hoops to be safe.

I hope the mom sues the school district and the abusers' parents.

People are looking for ways to take advantage of the situation.

Huh. You sound like a wonderful parent. /s

There is no reasonable lawsuit here.

i imagine lawyers can find a colorable claim.

It doesn't sound like she's on the same bus anymore.
