Incident on FCPS middle school bus

Anonymous
I found this part of the article interesting.

“ A guidance from the Virginia Department of Education says although schools are not legally responsible for enforcing a court order, safety should still be a priority. Officials can develop a safety plan, principals can collaborate with a parent, and a team can determine steps if the order is violated.“

My child has a significant medical issue that requires school staff to perform a medical procedure several times during the school day. They have a care plan from the Health Department, but are constantly ignoring it. I had a member of the 504 team tell me that they only have to do their best, but that they could never guarantee that it would be done and/or documented.

FCPS knows that they do not have to keep children safe and it shows up in many ways.

Don't all FCPS school buses also have cameras?

Parents must demand to have another responsible adult on each bus. The driver needs to drive.

Someone - another adult or a brave child - should have grabbed this girl immediately. I can’t imagine witnessing a vicious attack like this and doing NOTHING.

Good Lord! What is WRONG with FCPS that they allow this kind of thing to happen??

It is disgusting and disgraceful. Why do all these violient and emotionally dysregulated kids get to terrorize other kids and every one tip toes around the perpetrator. If I was this kids mom, there would already be a lawyer involved. Where is this girls parent? Their kid is a friggin menace.

Transportation is understaffed. Schools are understaffed. We have what, 2 counselors per 500 students? Are you surprised ?
“Don’t raise my taxes”. “Vote no on the meals tax.”

They have plenty of money. It is the way they choose to use it that is the problem. Gatehouse personnel, Equity speeches, name changes, etc. These add up.

In general I think FCPS could use more disciplinary enforcement. My spouse is a teacher and complains that kids don’t get suspended for anything these days.

The child who choked the victim needs to be expelled and sent to a restricted school environment.

A kid choked another student at our school last week. He was back in class the next day.

I know an IA who was threatened by a student who said he would bring in a gun and shoot her. Nothing was done and she was chastised for putting the student’s name in an email to admin.

I had an ES student tell the class he would “bring a gun to school and then they would start to take him seriously”. They spoke with him but that was it because he “didn’t have a plan”.

Why are we as a community okay with this happening? Why as parents and teachers are we allowing this insanity to happen in our schools? Why are we okay with this? When will it end?

You know when it’ll end... when we have leaders who prioritize safety. They all say what you want to hear, and then do nothing. Simply get rid of the liars.

Restorative justice = no discipline for the perpetrator and no justice for the victim.

The adolescent girl has anger issues. She might be having a rough home life. The school is probably fully aware of her past behaviors and should have intervened and found her some help or counseling/therapy. CPS needs to make a unannounced home visit to find out what is going on at home. The bus driver is negligent to allow it to continue to happen. I’m sure it’s happened more than once. Parents need to teach their kids self defense because the schools are not going to save them.

If you watch the video she stays below the level of the seat so the driver can’t see it.

I knows from the vitriol on this thread that the girl was black and the boy white. Not excusing her behavior, but she is a child who needs help, not a criminal.

I’ll argue that all criminals need help.

And, if it had been a white child, would you still think the same thing?
