Nope, both will likely have a below 20 percent acceptance rate this year. |
What are considered middle class stats at STA? I have two boys in middle school and trying to decide between privates and our local public (Langley). |
| Naviance shows that all top schools including MIT , Princeton, Stanford are matches for my TJ kid with 1550 SAT and 4.2 wgpa. I don’t believe that. What will be reasonable matches and safeties? |
My 1580 SAT magnet kid with a 4.77 wgpa was deferred at MIT, as was a few other magnet kids with similar stats. Naviance is crap. Reasonable matches/safeties depends on where you live and your major. |
Most kids get deferred by MIT including yours. I hope you knew that. |
| I haven't read the thread. We found that there aren't a lot of "matches" with our high-stats kid. It was safety or reach. Safeties were UVA and VT as well as some "fun" possibles where they would get merit/full ride like CU Boulder. Then reaches were the T20s. Child was top 5 in the class of over a thousand with high SATs, so UVA and VT were safeties and they were admitted & invited to honors or whatever it was called. |
Did they get into any T20s? What high school has over a thousand kids per grade?? Even the big publics have like 700-800 kids and that is huge. |

| So many trolls on this thread. |

Safety: UMd
No interest in paying big $$ for a school that is not notably better than UMd (will be a Stem major). Therefore he took a swing at a few heavyweights and if it doesn't work out, UMd it is. 1530/4.3w, private. I can't even imagine paying somewhere like BU (or many others) a truckload of money for an education that is not *notably and substantially* better or more prestigious than UMd and *is* notably less prestigious than HYP/Rice/Penn. And this is no knock on BU, its a very fine school probably better in some fields then UMd but is it 150-200K+ better? |
Rice? Did you go to Rice? |

Safeties are Pitt and Santa Clara.
Many matches, even matches/targets where DC is in the top 25%, but low acceptance rates keep DC from considering them safeties. Applying to 17 schools total. 4 reaches and I am not in support of all the reaches because I consider them a waste of time but I am not driving this bus. I do support the 11 matches/targets because DC is a strong match but the current state of test optional makes the likelihood of acceptance much harder to predict and she would prefer to go to one of those schools. I expect to be doing some traveling come April to visit schools. |
Be aware that Santa Clara yield protects. Not a true safety, in my opinion, unless already admitted EA. |
If they have submitted a good test score, its not that hard to predict. 11 matches is an awful lot but I guess, at this point, what's done is done.
Good Luck. |
I agree. It is hard not to pick UMD for stem fields or business if your kid doesn’t get into a reach. |
