If the Ivy League had to expand, who'd join?

Nah, need to go southern - solid candidate is Furman University in South Carolina. It’s old (1826) handled its ties to slavery with grace, and D1.

Why would Stanford, GT, and Duke decide to leave the ACC?

You people only care about the name brand as the academics wouldn't change. Also, the posters naming military academies and public schools are delusional to the Ivy brand. Georgetown, Duke, Vanderbilt, Emory, Rice, and maybe WashU would be considered as these schools are the best in a 100-mile radius and have a similar culture to the actual ivys.

The ACC pays a lot more than the IVY league

Georgetown or Duke are possibilities, but not sure they want to give up athletic scholarships though. Would that kill their basketball programs?

No on TN, GA, TX, or MS. Ew.

Some FCS school that is in geographic proximity already. No P5 school is giving up the tens of millions that it would cost them (i.e. no Wake, Vanderbilt or Stanford). Holy Cross, Colgate, Bucknell, Lehigh or Layette would make the most sense. They have D1 athletics, but not at a level that would cost them money to switch leagues and they have history and at least some academic credentials

They were considering Army, Navy and Northwestern in the 80s, so it's not impossible. I agree they don't want to dilute the brand, but it's unlikely adding schools like JHU will somehow cheapen the brand.

+1 I found this article while googling! https://www.nytimes.com/1982/01/10/sports/ivy-league-considers-adding-2-schools.html

Googling because I’m a Colgate alum and this thread made me remember there was a rumor that we were asked to join the Ivy League at some point but declined.

There’s a story indicating that Colgate did participate in the initial talks that led to the formation of the Ivy League, but dropped out before the League was formally established. https://badgerherald.com/news/2003/03/03/origins-of-the-term/

Then Colgate asked to join in the early 70s and the league said they didn’t want to expand. That was pre-Patriot League. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/1973/5/9/ivy-schools-deny-colgate-bid-to/

FWIW I think Army and Navy (but not Air Force) are the right answers.

I know someone was on the steering committee for when the Ivy League was seriously considering expansion, and West Point, Annapolis, and Northwestern were the only serious contenders.

This is correct.

Northwestern decided against joining the Ivy League back in the early 1980s because of the travel that the NU athletic teams would have to endure.
