Political Discussion
He's also not paying taxes on the air he breathes, or the water if he is collecting rainwater. |

I'm not a republican, but EV's are super dirty. Obtaining the resources to build the batteries are dirty. The manufacturing process is dirty. the disposal process is dirty. The energy used is dirty. Shipping and sourcing components all around the world is dirty.
Solar power cell manufacturing is INCREDIBLY dirty. Wind mill turbine blades are incredibly dirty. People not familiar with engineering are living in a fantasy land if they think any aspect of them are clean. |
| I am conservative and bought and electric car for the tax incentives and the cheap cost to run it after .gov paid for the charger. Our mini Cooper is perfect for this area and our needs. Gotta get my tax money back some how. 🍻 |
Electric really is better for the environment than gas - no argument from me. But the battery materials (supply chain, mining, disposal, waste) are real and serious issues. It does is no good to pretend these issues have been worked out because they haven’t. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t move toward electric. But they aren’t the panacea you are painting. Also? We need a heck of a lot more STEM kids and not just fetishize computer science. |
fAkE nEwS!!! Will not compute!! |

I am not a Republican and I can't stand EVs. I hate all cars in general. Cars require too much space and create inhumane environments.
People should use alternative transport methods. Most Americans need to exercise more too, hate me. I don't care. |
Because some basic facts aren't being addressed. There are some that "feel" this is the correct thing to do. They're pushing those feelings on others by FORCE and that's why it's as you call it "hated". Some facts. Mining has been severely cut back by environmentalists. You need lithium and other heavy metals to create the batteries for electric vehicles. China has a corner on the market in B. What is your PLAN to deal with A and B? Are you willing to accept more mining here? After 10-12 years, the battery fails. It is a large component of the cost of the vehicle. Is a car now a throw away vehicle after C happens? How will a consumer deal with that? Just put themselves in greater debt? Electric cars are expensive compared to gasoline cars. How long do you plan to subsidize them? We've already been doing significant tax payer subsidies for 15 years. Should the tax payer be subsidizing someone buying an $50,000 to $100,000 electric car? Since these are a fact, what's the plan for people who don't have the money to spend on an electric vehicle? I'm told the plan is to get rid of gasoline engines altogether. That won't sit well with "the poors", that I keep hearing are cared so much about. Another fact... at the end of every EV charging station, there's a power plant somewhere putting out smoke and solar panels have some of the dirtiest metals and chemicals in them. More over, with heavy government subsidization, why is Ford losing $60,000 on every EV it sells today? This isn't a new product. EV's have been around for a while now. But fewer people would buy them without the subsidies. Why can't they sell on their own? The consumer is telling us they are not willing to buy them without heavy government subsidies. What does that tell you about them? When the tax payer subsidizes the purchase of EVs, that takes away some of the disposable income of said tax payers. That means they have less to spend on other products and services of their choosing. They earn the money, yet Washington DC believes it should tell people how to spend more of their income based on feelings. Other businesses suffer based on edicts from Washington. That's bad. You asked why I hate electric vehicles. In summary, less personal choice. More force. More redistribution of income decided by political animals, who are some of the most loathsome people on the planet. More inefficiency of centralized planning and a command economy, which has failed everywhere it has been tried. This push is about feelings. It's is not about logic and rational thought. Have I answered your question? |

Sorry, some letters were dropped...
A) Mining has been severely cut back by environmentalists. B) You need lithium and other heavy metals to create the batteries for electric vehicles. China has a corner on the market in B. What is your PLAN to deal with A and B? Are you willing to accept more mining here? C) After 10-12 years, the battery fails. It is a large component of the cost of the vehicle. |
Seriously the additional resources use to manufacture an internal combustion cars are worst vs manufacturing of batteries and EV. EV use 30-40% less resources to manufacture. This makes EV manufacturing more environment vs production of ICE vehicles. With an ICE vehicle you also have on going demand for gas, oil, cooling systems, parts replacement, etc that continue to pollute over time. ICE will consume 11 tons of raw materials over its average life. A EV use 30 kilograms. Mineral extraction, processing and transports are very dirty processes. This includes all materials used in manufacturing of cars not just the batteries. One of the most dirty resources is steel production which ICE cars use more of vs EVs. Steel used in ICE cars is actually worst for the environment vs battery production for EVs. |
There will be few EVs built in Detroit. They will be built in China. |
Depending on the exact car and exact charging stations, you’d probably have to stop twice, for 15-20 minutes or so each time. For my family, that’s no big deal. We’d do that anyway to get food and go to the bathroom and stuff. More to the point, though, how often do you make that drive? For most people, nearly all of their driving is to and from work, running errands, etc. for those trips, you just charge overnight and never think about it. Right now our family has one EV and one ICE. Our next car will be a second ev, with the understanding that we may rent an ICE car if we ever want to do a long road trip and are concerned about infrastructure. So that’s maybe once every few years. |
+100 I have yet to see someone lay out a plan for getting from point A to point B on this. It seems like people think we can just flip a switch and boom! everyone is using eVs. |
| I’m a Republican and while I wouldn’t get one as I like to drive a manual, they are torquey and accelerate quickly . I just don’t want them to me mandated and gas cars banned. My dad is a diehard liberal and hates electric cars and people who drive them . |
EVs are far cleaner than ICE even when accounting for the entire manufacturing process:
Same thing with wind and solar compared to fossil fuels: The whole "EVs/renewables are just as dirty!" line is garbage GOP propaganda. |
