I can just see the college essays these young women have now been given the perfect writing prompt for....

Lmao- great use of your time. What a loser.

Just vote in your abortion on demand in your own state.

Parrot troll. Just ignore it.

She made the blanket statement of just avoiding the south. But it’s nice to have a more specific list.

That’s great! She should go to school with a planned parenthood gift card.

I think it’s smart that she avoided this south. There’s a correlation with these backwards states and their abortion laws and more lax gun laws. Between the two, that girl is smart to avoid the south altogether.

new england winters look better and better

For those who don't like diversity, sure.

because the south is the utopia for diversity?

I actually AM looking for schools with decent diversity for my daughter. She has grown up in NoVA, and is actually a minority in her school as a caucasian child. Our girls have friends of many colors, religious backgrounds, etc. It is absolutely something we would seek in a college. At least 3 of the 4 in New England under serious consideration seem to have a reasonably diverse student body.

Fact: New England is not a diverse area.

Why does the surrounding area really matter so much? It's about the student population on campus. I spent very little time off my college campus while I was there.

If the surrounding area has laws that don't put our child's life in jeopardy, then that is what matters at this point. It's not like she doesn't know diversity and college would be her first taste of it.

DP

Google tells me that Bama has 11% black students (which roughly tracks with the 12% of the national black demographics across America).

Boston College has 4%. Four.

Tell me northern schools you are looking at so we can compare.

My kid is going to majority minority k-12 schools so they have lived diversity. If they in college experience less diversity it is a trade off I’m willing to make to ensure they get access to health care so be it. I’d rather not have them paying for the next 18 years than have the diversity. If they get pregnant and want to keep it we will support that but I want them to have the option if they get pregnant and don’t want to.

Sure. Most people feel that way.

ICYMI: your kid can easily travel for the procedure.

Your lack of self-awareness/privilege is amusing. This faux outrage/faux crisis: this really doesn’t impact you or your daughter at all.

While I’m upset by the decision, and I can’t help being irked by the faux outrage I’m seeing here as well as FB. I know several women well past menopause ranting on FB about white men controlling their uterus. Not other women’s bodies, but their own. So many lesbian friends (including post menopausal) are doing the same thing. Some are independents or conservatives! The reality is their lives aren’t affected, and neither is yours, op.

The whole “college” angle really underscores why R’s detest D’s and use liberal elitism as an effective weapon.

And she sure as shit isn’t going to Ala-effing-bama

I picked the most stereotypical southern school I could think of and compared it with elite northern schools popular on dcum.

I think it’s rather telling that you dismiss Alabama with such hostility. That sort of bias is weird. Did you know their law school is ranked 23rd? Did you know their nursing school has a 100% licensure rate for grads (and a fabulous state of the art building)? Did you know Ernst & Young is one of their top recruiters at the business school? They had a Rhodes Scholar from NJ this year. They have a state of the art athletic and recreation facility for competitive wheel chair sports.

I could go on, but apparently you’ve written off the university, the state, and the people who live there. I guess you don’t know anyone who works at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, AL? I do. They are awesome lawyers doing amazing work at the national level and headquartered in AL.

Bless those at SPLC

Screw that backwards state

I know people who live there. They can have it.

I have zero interest in ever going there. And, oh, that is a line from a movie, so get over yourself

If my daughter gets raped in Alabama she will not be able to get a safe, legal abortion. Why would their law school ranking (23rd - yikes!) sway her decision?

Travel wouldn’t be possible in an emergency situation

I would never forgive myself if my daughter lived in one of the nutty states that views ectopic pregnancy as viable

Reminder to put pressure on ERNST AND YOUNG.

No way would I ever allow my daughters to attend college in one of the backward states that treat her like a second class citizen!! I won’t even visit those states or put a penny into their tourism.

Sorry, but I'm not a sock puppet. I do realize that many of the extremely liberal posters here are only able to have one "correct" opinion-- their own 😊

+1. Out of state parents do add a great deal of tourism money to those state’s economies.

No what you need to do is pull your men and sons out of these colleges, especially the ones who are there on sports scholarships. Because let me tell you those sports recruiters are sure as hell. Going to pull a lot more sway and money.

So your daughter will be in the 1% of reasons why women have an abortion and she can travel to a state with no restrictions. You people need to stop using this what if as your reasons!
