8th grader who is 15?

I don't even know how that's possible unless there was some stupid pandemic parenting involved (e.g. the parents were going to redshirt their child two years ago, then the Covid virtual year happened, so they held him back ANOTHER year). Anyone who just turned 8 should have been in 2nd grade this past year.

PP you're quoting. My DD is July 2015 baby, turning 7 next month, starting 2nd grade in the fall. Her kindergarten year, 2020, she turned 5 in July 2020. She was sent on time.

I know several kids in DD's grade are 2014 summer babies, ranging from June-August. All of those were held back, but obviously that decision was made the year prior to hold back because if they'd started on time, they would've started kindergarten in fall 2019 (turning 5 the summer before kindergarten).

I'm guessing those that were 8 in the spring were similar to the 2014 summer babies I discussed above, their parents had already decided to hold them back a year.

My child turns 13 during 8th grade so that’s a two year age difference. It’s a big difference.

Your child was 12 in 8th grade? That is not the norm at all! Most are 13 and turn 14 that year. My 14.5 year old just finished 8th and my 12 year old is now going into 7th. And we sent them on time. Your math seems off!

Your math is off, my child was 13 the entire 8th grade year.

All the birthdays my child attended in 8th grade were for kids turning 14. Nobody was 12, turning 13.

My child will be 12 turning 13 in 8th.

Mine will be, too. She will not turn 13 until December of 8th grade.

Are you in NY?

These discussions become meaningless when people from other areas don’t bother explaining the differences in their cut off dates.

No, we are in NOVA. DD went to private school for kindergarten and first grade, then began public school in second grade. She just finished sixth grade.

My niece also began kindergarten at age four, in a private school, and she turned five in November of that year. She then went to public school in first grade. She is now a rising senior.

That must be a sh1tty private school. The good ones around here would never let a 4yo (with a Dec birthday no less) start in K.

Wow, I'm so sorry you are having such a bad day. I hope your day gets better!

What month? If this is true, then your kid started kindergarten when they were 4. So they had to turn 5 fairly early in the year (depending on your state’s cutoff), or they wouldn’t have been allowed to go. So you’re being disingenuous at best. Your kid was 13 most of the year in 8th grade.

In Virginia the cut off for K is Sept 30 I think so you'd have a handful of kids each year who will start K at age 4.
They will start 8th at age 12, have a birthday in September when they turn 13 and yes they will be 13 most of the year.

Spring birthday 2008, likely March-April and held back one year.

1/2 year older than fall birthday 2008 kids who are among the oldest in the grade. and 1.5 years older than fall 2009 kids who are the youngest. Not a big deal in life but big difference at this age in particular due to adolescence. Child is probably winning all kinds of competitions due to boosted age.

My child started kinder at 5 and was 5 the entire time, that made DC 13 the entire 8th grade year. I suppose your child was below average as was classmates.

You realize you are just saying that your child is superior by virtue of having a summer birthday and being among the youngest on time kids? You have to be 5 by the cut off and some kids just miss it by a day or a week or a month. Unless you are a child whose 5th birthday is after the start of school, but before the cut off, you will turn 6 during K or in the summer after, just like yours.

My personal opinion is that the cut off should be the first day of school. I don't think those kids born between the first day of school and the cut off should be starting K at age 4.

My child was not 4 when school started, stupid.

The good schools redshirt almost all summer birthdays.

Probably a wacky “Christian” school.

Happens with immigrants too, when you move to another country and join a different education system

Did I ever say my child was 12? It literally says that my child was 13 the entirety of 8th grade. Dumbass.

The thread you were commenting on was talking about kids who were 12 in 8th grade. You responded to a question about a parent who said their child was 12.

This, I have two December kids and one Summer birthday child.

+1

I bet this kid's parents are simply bursting with pride over the fact that their child is outperforming kids over a year younger than them.

Being any age other than 13 in 8th grade is pretty rare.
