Everyone I know who has been actively engaging the school and APS has actually said both. One, that he shouldn’t be there. Because two, This boy needs help including placement in a school that can provide the services he needs. APS and his parents have failed this kid, and now the school community as well by letting it get to this point. We are hopeful that they will work to keep our kids safe, AND also get him help. You can do both - want the school safe and hurt for this child who obviously desperately needs help. |
School does nothing either. The child needs real ongoing mental health support and that isn't what the school can provide. I disagree and think that suspension is needed for the safety of the rest of the students. The safety of other students is not "nothing". Suspension also offers this students a respite from school which might be causing serious anxiety. |
they did suspend him |
So bringing a taser only gets a suspension? |
What should it be?? Hanging? Get a grip. He is a KID! |
The suspension piece is what speaks to the immediate safety of the school community and therefore was shared. The email also references that APS policy is that any weapon or weapon-like object results in referral to the police (even though the police weren't immediately called, which is a whole separate issue). Beyond that, whether and how they are getting him supports steps over into his privacy and is not a detail to be shared with everyone. Doesn't mean it isn't happening. It means that in the short term it's none of our business. Send good thoughts to the kid. Email the school, staff and SB to encourage them not to wait in future instances. Kids who are troubled in 4th grade don't magically become healthy and well by the time they reach middle school. We need to do better both at getting mental health resources to kids who need it, and in acting on school property to keep all kids safe, and in informing parents rather than hiding behind the veil of "privacy". |
That’s not how it went as there was a threat made by this child to the school for what he was already previously having disciplinary action for. When he returned to school he had a taser. |
Interesting point. I wonder how his elementary school principal feels about how previous incidents were handled… |
How many suspensions should he get? Threatening...weapon...come on people send him to an alternative option. What will he do next??? |
#fakenews |
And it was a Taser, not a loaded gun. |
Whoa. I thought Swanson was one of the more sought after schools? |
Something like this can happen at any middle school. Truly. |
True. I guess I'm just surprised. We were just driving past there today and admiring the neighborhood as a step up to where we are! |
This is a very strange position. Events like people are fearing in this thread have happened primarily in “nice” neighborhoods at “good” schools. You can’t buy safety from this, not in this f***ed up country with its gun culture. |
