Tell me about Whitman

With the one exception being that the school can be quite challenging. And I've talked to many parents and current students.

I'm not trying to stir things up here, I just really don't get it.
Either people are not being honest when we talk, or if there are just a few posters here who for some reason really don't like whitman.

Er, okay. I haven't been Whitman bashing, but there are three people I know with direct Whitman associations. One, a student years ago, who found the students insular and elitist and couldn't wait to get out. One, a parent with 2 kids there who regrets having moved to the neighborhood d/t the feeling of high pressure and exclusion/exclusivity. And one, a teacher who loves her students but loathes how completely out of touch with reality the vast majority of them are, and who would never send her kid there.

(To be complete, I also have another friend who went there years ago and whose opinion on it I don't know. I think that's it, though.)

Of course it's just anecdata, but I doubt those are the only three people in the world who know Whitman from firsthand experience, and do not have only "very positive things to say."

Those schools have since caught up and passed it in some measures especially diversity and nationally it can't compete with the top schools.

Montgomery County Schools aren't even the best in the state anymore. A sad time indeed.

Well, no, but that’s because Howard County schools are kicking butt and taking names. The county has a better educated population abs fewer poor people. But Whitman is still excellent.

Not really. If you look at similar SES bands for these areas you'll see they're really kind of average. It's like a school believing they are awesome because their test score average is high when the reality is it's high because they have a low FARMS number, and regardless the same kid would do exactly the same at any of these schools.

My DS is a very good student with some LD, great athlete who will no doubt make the team of his sport and may even play varsity freshman year. He’s super quiet. How will he do at Whitman? He’s never been in such a huge school. His current school is tiny. But he’s looking forward to HS.

I think Whitman is one of those schools with all the racial incidents. It's very segregated and is often jokingly referred to as "whiteman".

I have no kids at Whitman, but it bothers me when people with no personal experience jump in to say something that adds nothing. Enough with the "I think" and "anecdata" posts. To the parent who posted about her son, I'm sure he'll be fine in public school.

I posted "anecdata" literally in response to another poster saying they'd never heard anything but very positive reports from people *with* personal experience. I didn't claim that meant anything except that there absolutely do exist people who don't think very positively about Whitman.

It is not segregated you moron. There's hardly any kids of color in the school, that would be impossible.
Really I don't understand why posters who have no kids at the school and probably don't even live in the Whitman cluster feel the need to spread total BS on this site.

Those incidents were well documented on this board. They're actually very disturbing.

Hilarious. As if DCUM's MCPS forum is an official record of anything. That's the funniest thing I've read in weeks PP. Thanks.

DP - Whitman problems are well known and the current administration is trying hard to change the environment. But with the behaviors of some Whitman parents, it's going to take a while.

The high school and middle school administrators need to work together more effectively. Problems don't suddenly sprout in high school. The leadership of the two schools have to collaborate, and students at the two schools have to collaborate, in more personal ways.
