I am always struck by how the only negative things I hear about whitman are on this site. Literally everyone I talk to irl about the school has very positive things to say. With the one exception being that the school can be quite challenging. And I've talked to many parents and current students. I'm not trying to stir things up here, I just really don't get it. Either people are not being honest when we talk, or if there are just a few posters here who for some reason really don't like whitman.
Er, okay. I haven't been Whitman bashing, but there are three people I know with direct Whitman associations. One, a student years ago, who found the students insular and elitist and couldn't wait to get out. One, a parent with 2 kids there who regrets having moved to the neighborhood d/t the feeling of high pressure and exclusion/exclusivity. And one, a teacher who loves her students but loathes how completely out of touch with reality the vast majority of them are, and who would never send her kid there. (To be complete, I also have another friend who went there years ago and whose opinion on it I don't know. I think that's it, though.) Of course it's just anecdata, but I doubt those are the only three people in the world who know Whitman from firsthand experience, and do not have only "very positive things to say."
