Flying with a young two year old - masks?

Anonymous
Some grade A trolling going on here or there really are some nuts.

OP, you'll be okay. We've flown a dozen times in the last 2 years and have had minimal issues with the flight attendants being strict about the mask wear for almost four year old. It's so ridiculous that kids these young even have to wear these masks.

She wears it at daycare for her teachers (poorly, often slips below her nose) but will rip it off for me. I can bribe her with an iPad at times but it just stops below. No one even blinked. Including TSA which saw her birthdate. People. If you are concerned about a 2 year old wearing a mask on a plane, you should definitely not be flying. People are starting to return to the office at this point, and seriously, people no longer care. This is not 2020. We all recently had covid, and my young kids were asymtomatic.

Do you always speak for everyone?

Get outside of your bubble

She can’t. She may run into an unmasked person and instantly die.

Yes, so ridiculous to wear a mask in an enclosed space with many people during a pandemic.

They are practically babies. It is not a fair expectation. We all gave up a bunch of stuff selflessly to help Grandma but we won't give our littlest ones a break?

Oh STFU. Kids this young aren't even wearing them properly. All a damn show.

Interesting, he will wear a mask just fine. However, to avoid wearing a mask that he is fine wearing, you stuff him with snacks. But it’s ok, because the FA never says anything. Ok, got it. That’s some sound advice.

It’s not developmentally appropriate. Many of the 2 year olds are licking and chewing on their masks and they are wet. So even if they are on their faces, they aren’t doing jack sh*t.

I’m sure there are no studies performed to show that wearing a mask at a particular age is not developmentally appropriate. But you must know something I don’t, would you mind posting the study?

Plus a million. I am a huge mask advocate and will keep mine on indoors for years but it makes no sense to have 2 year olds wear them. Maybe 3 or 4 but most 2 year olds aren’t even toilet trained. They have no way of keeping it on in a way that’s useful to them or others

Do you try to avoid flights in general that have children under 2 as passengers, since they wouldn't be wearing masks either? Or flights where beverages/snacks will be served, since other passengers will demask to eat/drink?

I think the 2 years cutoff is pretty terrible for multiple reasons- from a developmental perspective, it's unreasonable to expect a toddler who may well still be in diapers (!!) to suddenly wear a face covering for hours at a time. And the messaging is such that it's considered unsafe to put them on kids under 2, so its no wonder that a new 2yo is going to struggle. Most childcares understand this- they recognize there will be a transition period and don't expect perfect compliance the day the child turns 2. But then you have posters like this who regard an unmasked 25 mo as a threat to your health and well being.

Look at the WHO guidance. I think the problem in the US is that the CDC is really concerned with one thing only- reducing Covid spread. The only thing they considered with young kids was the suffocation issue, and decided that once kids are 2 that isn't a concern anymore. I heard that at one point they were considering 18 months.

I get what you are saying. The problem is that the OP wants to lie about her sons age and hide him. She knew what the regulation is before planning the flight and should have reconsidered if she cannot follow through with what the regulation requires right now. I don’t presume you would condone her being dishonest and trying to sneak her kid into not wearing a mask.

DP. You're being weirdly, obsessively moralistic. This thread is completely bonkers. I don't know what is wrong with you people. Is your entire self-worth based on feeling superior to people? It's so depressing.

Seriously. It's for other people's comfort, not their safety. The Old Navy mask isn't doing anything, and the kid's size KN-95 doesn't fit.
