You typed the wrong words in, Jen. You seem to be the one wrapped up in identifying in how great your kid is at a children's activity. No one is going to the NBA. Only the deeply insecure have this level of caring about "level of play" amongst different travel leagues. |
Agree coach mentioned above is ridiculous - reiterated above that during regular season playing time should be fairly even and reasonable. Was just commenting on different poster above who seemed to think that should happen during playoff games as well - would draw line there, that's all. |
It's not a direct comparison. The FCYBL is better for preparing kids to play team-oriented high-school basketball with sophisticated offensive sets and changing defenses. AAU is much, much better for building toughness and athleticism. But to those who reflexively trash the FCYBL, just keep in mind that a former FCYBL player (for Herndon) got a Duke offer this week. And another former FCYBL player (for Arlington) was the top recruit last year for the UConn women's team. It's an excellent environment for young players to learn the right lessons on the court as they prepare for larger grassroots stages. |

The suburban friendship league for soccer is a rec league. Anyone can play.
There are very limited spots to play on fcybl teams. So I don’t get the comparison. |
| Can anyone tell me if this coach won the second playoff game? My kid was on the team that they narrowly beat. We were sad to lose but grateful that it was a fun experience for our child. People seem to forget that we are talking about kids here. Agree with playing time not needing to be equitable once kids get older but all kids should at least enter the game at the bare minimum. These are 4th and 5th graders! |

The Vienna lower division 5th grade team played Falls Church and beat them by 3 points, so they will play in the tournament championship game next weekend against Great Falls.
So now this guy can brag that he got his team to the championship game....with half the team barely or not playing at all all season long. Classy! |
|
Why everybody hatin' on the Vienna Coach. FYI, he always plays at least 10 of his players all the time. Accdg to FYBL website, they have 13 rostered players. It will be extremely hard for a coach to play all 13 for 28 minutes, especially
in playoffs. Again this is not rec basketball. Obviously, some of the haters here don't know competitive basketball. I'm NOT affiliated with the Vienna Coach |
Do coaches or does the league control roster sizes? Are all FCYBL rostered players "picked" or assigned? As a coach for another sport I never wanted more players on the bench than who could actually play in a game because it creates playing time inequities, making it impossible to play everyone at least half the game, which for ages like U12 and below, playing time is more developmentally appropriate than win-at-all-costs. Is FCYBL a developmental league? If so, they should limit roster sizes to 10. |
|
I think the minimum roster size is 9.
I have never heard of coaches not being able to select their teams for fcybl. |
Teams control their roster sizes (there's a min/max for the league but largely left up to teams). So some teams carry more but may communicate to parents that they're only going to play 10 in games (so additional 2-4 get advantage of practicing against better kids). As long as team plans are communicated in advance to parents, I don't see problem with it - parents can make whatever decision they want (play/practice in competitive league but maybe not get much PT OR play rec). That said, I'm guessing given other behaviors cited, most coaches likely don't communicate this clearly enough up front. |
Hi Coach! |
Yes, players play FCBYL for fun in the off season. It's the same as summer swim - a low key league with a geographic focus that is more fun and less pressure than the real seasons. |
Oh that’s not fair. It could be his wife or mom. |
| How is winter off season for basketball? |
I think some coaches pick up to 12 players in case some players don't consistently attend games so they will have enough |
