Why everybody hatin' on the Vienna Coach. FYI, he always plays at least 10 of his players all the time. Accdg to FYBL website, they have 13 rostered players. It will be extremely hard for a coach to play all 13 for 28 minutes, especially in playoffs. Again this is not rec basketball. Obviously, some of the haters here don't know competitive basketball. I'm NOT affiliated with the Vienna Coach
Do coaches or does the league control roster sizes? Are all FCYBL rostered players "picked" or assigned? As a coach for another sport I never wanted more players on the bench than who could actually play in a game because it creates playing time inequities, making it impossible to play everyone at least half the game, which for ages like U12 and below, playing time is more developmentally appropriate than win-at-all-costs. Is FCYBL a developmental league? If so, they should limit roster sizes to 10.
Teams control their roster sizes (there's a min/max for the league but largely left up to teams). So some teams carry more but may communicate to parents that they're only going to play 10 in games (so additional 2-4 get advantage of practicing against better kids). As long as team plans are communicated in advance to parents, I don't see problem with it - parents can make whatever decision they want (play/practice in competitive league but maybe not get much PT OR play rec). That said, I'm guessing given other behaviors cited, most coaches likely don't communicate this clearly enough up front.
