It is very troublesome because we've never had a point in our history, certainly within living memory, when there's been such an intense pressure to censor and shut down different veiwpoints in a liberal democracy. I grew up believing and being told all along that a liberal democracy was a marketplace of ideas and free speech, That people were free to share their ideas in exchange for having to tolerate different views and ideas in the same marketplace. If you didn't like something you heard, you didn't have to listen to it, you know? Using political and cultural pressure to demand businesses stifle different viewpoints is not part of a liberal democracy. That is what fascism does. Which is really bizarre, given that the same people attacking anything they disagree with as proto-fascism are the ones who are most quick to make illiberal demands that fascist regime did.

It's ironic that Neil Young, who made a fortune with music railing against the state, is demanding the same state shut down views he doesn't agree with....

This is a ridiculous take. No one can force a platform to host their podcast, or their viewpoint. Is Neil Young asking the US gov't to shut down spotify? No. He's telling spoitfy he's done with their business relationship, unless they remove someone he finds objectionable. Deplatforming isn't the same as censorship.

If you don't like something you heard and you find it objectionable/dangerous/harmful, you can stop paying for or using the service that is putting it out. Or, you can pull your music from a service if you happen to be a musician.

If I want to avoid financially supporting horrible people, I can.

But, I have not cancelled my spoitfy, I just think this take on "cancel culture" is terrible.

Also, just in case anyone is confused, Spotify didn't even remove Rogan. He isn't cancelled. I doubt enough people will cancel spotify to make them change their mind.
