I will just never understand the people who are ‘meh’ about whether they catch this - or any other- virus. It’s the ultimate roll of the dice, even robustly healthy people can be killed or permanently disabled by viral infections. Vaccines are the single greatest advancement in medicine and possibly in the history of the human race for this very reason, they have saved hundreds of millions of lives over the history of vaccinology.

It’s painful to realize that so much of our population is science illiterate and yet so cocksure

Dunning-Kruger effect on full, glorious display. The dumber they are, the more they’ve convinced themselves they’re the smartest person in the room.

DP and agree 100%. Cocksure is the perfect word to encapsulate all the people on this website who try to tell intelligent people that they just have anxiety for being concerned about Covid. It never offended me, but just made me feel pity knowing their hubris may actually hurt a loved one. The chorus of people who aren’t worried AT ALL about their kids getting sick but are solely worried about quarantine are the ones who are really going to be shocked when mother nature proves herself yet again. I really hope people start seriously trying to avoid this virus. Some very concerning evidence is mounting. I don’t want to play I told you so, because it gives me no satisfaction if innocent people get hurt. I just want people to snap out of their delusion.

I think the people who aren’t that worried about their kids are just better at math than you. Statistical likelihood of anything serious happening to a healthy child is insanely low.

we're all just a bunch of guinea pigs.

It’s going to turn out to be more like polio than like the flu.

This made me laugh given our whole family are math dorks. It's not the acute infection phase I am concerned about.

+1

I'm not sure if this will surpass Delta in terms of deaths, but there is no question it will surpass all other variants for children hospitalizations.

They have confirmed that mRNA vaccines cannot pass the blood/brain barrier. https://www.chop.edu/centers-programs/vaccine-education-center/vaccine-safety/blood-brain-barrier-and-vaccines

+1. More fear porn.

+2. The NON- peer reviewed study was done on OLD people who are usually declining in health.

The studies are coming out fast and furious this month it seems - and of course most are non peer reviewed for now. But if you dismiss it out of hand as fear porn, then you are talking about a lot of different research institutions. I wouldn't bet on minimal long term effects at this point.

A recent study from the UK reviewed brain scans of 785 people from before and after the pandemic began (a strength of the study is they compared scans of the *same* people, and included a control group) to measure changes to the brain across time. It study found that the people who had tested positive for COVID had significant brain damage, including loss of gray matter among other damages to brain tissue. The pathological changes to the brain were matched by evidence of cognitive decline in tests that assessed the cognitive function of the cohort. The findings held firm even with those who had mild cases of COVID.

Note that this is pre-print paper that is undergoing peer review.

I’m trying to decide whether to send my unvaxxed kid to school Monday and am so demoralized.

I don’t believe the paper says what you think it does. This is not brain damage in the typical form in which that term is widely used.
It merely states that there are changes in the gray matter of the brain of patients with Covid. They do not know if this is a function of the mechanism causing loss of smell/taste or the virus’ pathway into the nervous system or general inflammation. They also don’t know if these changes are temporary or have any lasting impact. The paper concludes with uncertainty related to whether the changes in the brain are directly tied to Covid or may be impacted by stress or other external factors.
