I'm a 46 year old female who eats very healthy and exercises five days a week. Unfortunately, my cholesterol levels have crossed into the high range. I have a family history of diabetes also, and my glucose levels are at the very high end of normal. It's so frustrating as I eat really well, exercise, and don't drink. What can I do? I'd like to avoid a statin for as long as possible. |
What is your healthy eating? |
Your glucose is normal and you may not be able to do much. Did they check your A1C? That's a better indicator of your diabetes risk.
As for cholesterol, are you eating limited saturated fat and sugar? That is about all you can do. What is your ratio? That's more important than overall numbers. |
For cholesterol, reduce saturated fat by a lot, and increase fiber, especially soluble fiber. Oats, legumes (beans and lentils), chia seeds, veggies, fruit. |
OP here. My eating is really healthy, tons of veggies, beans, fish once a week, chicken once a week, steel cut oatmeal, quinoa, lots of nuts. No processed foods except for tortilla chips and popocorn which I eat a handful of times a week, but no sweets. |
Avocados too, lots |
Ask for medication |
Are you sure it’s not your good cholesterol that is high? Lots of exercise can elevate your HDL, which is a good thing. |
What is your glucose level? Did they also test A1c? |
Psyllium is supposed to help with cholesterol and glucose levels, plus it helps keep you full longer. It's also great for your gut health. I take 2 teaspoons each morning for regularity and digestive health.

Glucose was a 99. They did not test A1c as far as I can tell, |
Interesting, thank you |
Can you swap out oatmeal for eggs? Oatmeal causes big increases in blood sugar for many people. |
I think you just need to accept that you need a statin. Sometimes high cholesterol is just hereditary and there’s not much you can do to improve it. My sister is a vegetarian and a (fast!) marathon runner who has always had high cholesterol. Like even in her 20s. She’s not yet 40 and is on a low dose of a statin. She eats basically no white carbs, almost no dairy. Tons and tons of fish and beans and veggies and fruit and whole grains. Runs 4-6 marathons a year. |
