UofM vs Northwestern

Which would you pick? Worth noting: student is in-state for Michigan tuition,
Majoring in engineering

Michigan for sure.

If in-state, Michigan ten times over.

For engineering, I don't see how it's worthwhile to pay an extra $250,000 to attend Northwestern.

Even without the price difference, Michigan Engineering is head and shoulders above. OP, did your kid do the specific engineering tour at Michigan? It was very impressive.

^^^Agreed!!!

Academics aside, since other commenters touched on this already. I think UofM is a way more fun school!

Academics, cost, social life, the whole shebang.

This is what we’re thinking as well. Is there any case/area of study would you would consider Northwestern over UofM? While we can pay Northwestern without issue, UofM instate tuition is so much less. I can’t help but to consider the value of the money spent.

NP: What makes UM Engineering better than Northwestern Engineering? They're ranked about the same. Northwestern, as a private school, might have more amenities, more attention to getting its students jobs? UM might have more big research grants because it's so big? (I'm a UM alum and fan, by the way).

I would say my kid is going to UMich and the undergrad math education is very tough. Majors have high math requirements and many students try and take math at community colleges to avoid the first two years of math—through linear algebra.

My kid is busy taking Nova CC classes to beef up on math.

If your kid is weak in math I would be careful about UMich.

It makes zero sense unless your kid has a strong affinity to NU.

You think Northwestern will be easier?

Northwestern rep score 4.0

It comes down to private vs public school experience. NU has about 2100 in a Freshman class and Michigan 7500. Engineers used to have their own domain on North Campus so it felt a lot smaller-not sure if this is still the case? Both amazing BIG 10 schools so you can’t go wrong!!
