Sent daughter to school with cramps

Anonymous
My 15 yo had bad cramps from starting her period today. She's had her period for over 2 years, but this time medicine was necessary. She felt bad when she woke up (not vomiting or anything), but I said she had to go to school (bus was coming soon) and gave her some ibuprofen for the cramps. I said the meds will help in about 15-20 minutes, but if she still feels bad, go to the nurse at school and I will pick her up.

Now I feel bad that maybe I should have just called in and let her skip a day. Maybe I should have let her stay home until the cramps subside and then take her in? She's never been one to try to get out of school. Do you let your daughters miss school for their period cramps?

I missed school a lot of cramps. A lot. I ended up doing well academically - I’m a doctor now so it didn’t impact me that way but I’m so mad my mom didn’t put me on birth control or help to control these issues earlier. As a young professional, I’d miss work due to how severe they were. In the end a wonderful NP worked with me to get an IUD and it changed my life.

You are over-thinking this. She wanted to go to school, took some meds (I probably would have sent her with another dose), and will call is she needs to be picked up. What’s the problem?

She is learning to navigate this in a heathy way

Has she tried Thermacare heat wraps? I use those along with ibuprofen when I have to go to work instead of sitting on the couch with a heating pad.

Letting her stay home would have been fine, and sending her with the understanding that she can get picked up if needed is also fine! Neither choice is bad. She’ll be fine.

Adding: To answer your question, yes I would let her miss school for cramps, if she felt strongly she couldn’t cope. But if this was happening with each month, I’d take her to the doctor and get her on BCP. There is no reason to suffer and there are plenty of other treatments if OTC meds aren’t effective

Could you imagine if women took off every time they had cramps.

Nope!

My mom would send me to school with meds and the heat patches. She would send a note to excuse me from gym though.

There was no wrong choice . Sending her to school with ibuprofen is fine as would have keeping her at home.

I had really bad cramps when I was young and I couldn’t focus because evil with medication my cramps hurt. Sometimes I would stay home. Most of the time I would go to school.

I think it’s ok to see how it goes. My concern would be if it’s a school that limits access to the bathroom - she needs to be able to go when she needs to in case she has GI symptoms.

OP here. I feel bad because she asked to stay home (and she's never asked), but I think you're right. I never got to stay home either that I can remember. It's been a long time!

She can chart her cycles (the Oura ring can do this with the Natural Cycles app without any work on the user’s part…it will track the temp rise after ovulation and she can know when to expect her period even if her cycle is irregular). If ibuprofen is started the day *before* the period starts, the cramps are mostly prevented and the pain is much less than waiting until it gets bad and then treating.

I have a medical condition that prevents me from being able to take hormones…the pill isn’t an option for everyone. But this has been life changing for me.
