Highest average SAT scores post-covid of the top 35 colleges as we evolve into a more test required environment

This data is from US News. MIT is the only one test required for this data cycle. Show in the percentage submitting the SAT OR ACT (with the understanding that some might submit both). Since US News curiated the data from the 2022-2023 cycle, that year's data is used for the submission percentage.

Not a lot of surprises. There were a couple of schools who saw the submittal rate drop fairly decently from year to year, including Pomona and Swarthmore

1. UChicago 1545 [unknown how many submit an SAT or ACT as it hasn't published a Common Data Set since the 2021-2022 cycle at which time it was 84%]
2. MIT 1543 Test mandatory
3. Dartmouth 1528 * Its 2023-2024 Common Data set did not publish any SAT data
4. WashU 1527 [60% submitted an SAT and/or ACT score]
5. Penn 1527 [71% submitted an SAT and/or ACT score]
6. Stanford 1527 [72% submitted in 2022-2023, 69% submitted in 2023-2024)
7. Princeton 1526 [85% submitted an SAT and/or ACT score]
8. Yale 1524 [88% submitted an SAT and/or ACT score]
9. Carnegie Mellon 1521 [70% submitted an SAT and/or ACT score]

Some of the new averages are insane. BC was probably 80-100 points lower in 2019. Most of the schools were probably 50-75 points lower pre pandemic.

If/when these schools go back to test required, we will see the scores go down. Still, it makes me shake my head in disbelief when I see someone bemoan how a 1500 is a bad score.

You can see what TO has done with NYU. Since they take such a large percentage TO, only the top scorers submit. Since only the top scorers submit, the average goes up. Only 32% sumbitted test scores in 2021-2022. I guess you might say that NYU has gamed the SAT score game.

There's more to an application than a test score.

Thank you for pulling this together.

MIT went back to test mandatory for the current admissions cycle. They were test optional for this data set.

Maybe a week or so ago someone on DCUM posted the pre covid average SATs for the top 50 or so schools. MIT & Cal Tech were the only two that broke 1500.
