Is it tacky for adults to order fish & chips from the children's menu during Lent?

My husband and I don't really enjoy fried fish but it's sort of a Friday custom during Lent. The kid's menu fish & chips at a local restaurant is the perfect size and it's one-third the price of the regular menu fish & chips. But I feel a bit skittish ordering 4x kids meals, which are for two adults and two kids. This is an online order, to-go. We aren't total misers, we would tip $5, if it makes any difference.

If it’s 1/3 of the price, they are likely losing money on it and offer it to get more adults in the restaurant. So it is a good way to help drive the place out of business. Leaving a crappy tip does not make it better.

I think for an online order to go it's fine. You're not taking up a table.

Fine for to go. Tip more than $5 for god’s sake.

In person, I would tell them I’d be willing to pay an up charge for the kids’ meals.

No need to do that on takeout. Plenty of people order kids’ meals on takeout and delivery. I can’t finish most of the huge adult portions, anyway.

That’s on them to figure out pricing. Totally fine, OP. Especially as a take out order.

It's a smaller portion. If we got the adult fish & chips there'd be a lot left over. Nobody wants fried fish and fries leftovers.

I love fish and chips but haven't found a good place around here. Would love if you could suggest or drop the name if you are in DMV.

And ideally adults don't order kids menu items but to me that's more for table service. Online order is fine although it must be amazing if it can survive takeout.

I thought $5 on $36 (4x kids meals) was a decent tip?

Gordon Ramsay fish and chips at the wharf is pretty solid and reasonably priced

I would 2-3 adult meals.

If its to-go and youre sharing at home, I'd probably just order 1 regular and maybe 1 kids size.

Why would you order 4 tiny portions instead of 1-2 larger portions that you share?

Not tacky. You are good to go.

Ahh you haven’t discovered the joys of a piece of leftover fish on plain white bread the next day...even better.

I order kids' meals a lot because of dietary issues and I always tip as though I had ordered an adult-sized entree. That said, I generally don't tip 20% on takeout orders, usually more like 10%, but that's a whole nother conversation.
