They are offering free tuition after receiving a $1billion gift. Now that's how colleges should be using endowments. |
| That's about to be one of the hardest medical schools in the country to get into |
|
Seems like a trend for medical school…NYU is free as well.
Med school graduates kids with tons of debt. Certainly, it makes these schools very attractive for applicants. |
| Great idea OP, I'm sure we're the only ones thinking about this. |
|
it is? wow, didn't know that. I'm sure schools like Harvard and the like with their large endowment could do something similar. We need more doctors in this country. |

Check out the hair on the dean. Definitely trying to live up to the institution’s name. |
| in Bronx?!!? |

Such an amazing gift.
Women billionaires are killing it. |
That was part of why the donor chose to donate -- she wanted to make med school more accessible for students in the Bronx (and similar neighborhoods). |
Frank Langone (Home Depot founder) made a similar gift like 3 years ago. We need more doctors willing to practice the medicine the country needs, that often doesn't pay well (geriatric, rural medicine, etc.) vs. kids saddled with huge debt that have to specialize in plastic surgery and other high $$ practices. Not sure there are any strings attached to the free Medical school, but hopefully not having the excessive student loan burden helps. |
|
Another route to free med school is to join the military. No tuition and you get junior officer pay while being a student.

+1 I think that the NY Times article said Einstein has like 5x the percentage of medical students with high levels of debt (i.e. not rich kids whose parents are paying). The other thing I loved was that she insisted on keeping the school named Einstein rather than having it named after herself like so many other donors who donated far less but got their name on (ex: Langone, Weill etc.) |
Because the person donating often dictates how their money must be used. Same situation here. This is not some wonderful thing the school decided, it's the wonderful thing the gift giver did. |
New Yorker here. Fantastic doctors come out of that school. It is well-regarded. |
