Because PAs and NPs have killed the push for doctors to want to be general practitioners.

This gift is silly. Modern medical students are pretty much the most affluent cohort of college students -- both by family net worth and projected future HHI -- so they get to hoard even more of their wealth? This only benefits the largely UMC and rich medical students and the rich insider "money managers" who get to skim millions off the principal investment forever.

My DH's alma mater as well. Great school and I spent a lot of time up there as I was in grad school at NYU at the time. Montefiore and Jacobi are fantastic hospitals.

it also encourages people from middle and lower class to go into medical school.

We need more doctors, but mostly in non specialized fields.

The people who are REALLY popping the champagne corks are current students at Einstein. Every current student is being reimbursed this semester's tuition! And the no tuition policy applies going forward. So, if you are a current first year student, you'll end up paying only for your first semester of med school.

Would be interesting to read a deep dive into how this changed those current med students' paths, what specialties aimed in, where they'd like to practice (i.e. under-served regions). You would hope it would encourage more selfless and passionate behavior, but I doubt it. Modern medical student strivers are basically all fake and robotic tiger mom spawn, so they'd know to spin and whip up a narrative for any reporter who poked around.

Medicine SUCKS in America. Both my husband and I are MDs. The corporate overtaking of the medical field makes it MISERABLE. Have fun all you future doctors! Our kids are avoiding medicine like the plague. Look at how we were treated during Covid. No wonder there is a shortage.
