Giving up coffee. Is it self-defeating if…

you just switch to decaf espresso and/or tea?

Having gone off caffeine a few times for long periods, it will be a lot easier if you quit altogether. Take Advil starting on day two for three days or so. Then you’ll be over it.

I quit coffee in October and replaced it with tea, sometimes caffeinated and sometimes not. I started drinking it again a couple of weeks ago but can’t finish more than half a cup now - regularly had two cups a day - and find I’m much more sensitive to it now.

The decaf subreddit has a lot of information you might find helpful.

Decaf tastes strange to me. Like it has no essence. It's just "off" to me.

I had to temporarily give up caffeine after I had covid due to an irregular heartbeat. The only way decaf tasted good was percolated. I bought a mini percolator since everyone else drank fully caffeinated.

What do you mean by self defeating?
I stopped drinking coffee and occasionally make myself a chai latte or green tea with honey. It’s been 4 months now.
I don’t miss coffee.

Why are you giving up? Just curious to know your motivation.

The body of evidence suggests strongly a correlation between coffee consumption (caffeinated or decaffeinated) and greater longevity compared to people who don’t drink coffee.

Tea, especially green, is also associated with greater longevity.

What is the difference between an plain espresso latte vs chai latte? The latter has a lot of sugar. Same for black coffee vs green tea with 30g of sugar from honey to make it drinkable.

Depends on the reasons the person is giving up coffee. If caffeine is messing up their sleep schedule why would they care about sugar? I’m not a cold turkey person but I have tapered off my caffeine consumption since I had kids to keep my sleep schedule consistent. Sugary decaf tea or dessert doesn’t keep me up until midnight but coffee after 11am sure does.

Harney & Sons sells a wonderful hot cinnamon green tea that is significantly lower in caffeine than coffee and is sweetened entirely by natural cinnamon - which has great health benefits - thus needs no sugar or honey. Zero calories, highly recommend!

Some people need to reduce their caffeine intake: pregnant women, for example, or people who struggle with insomnia.

Tea has less caffeine than coffee, OP, so you could try that. Black tea contains the most caffeine, so if you pick that, make sure not to steep the tea too much.

I am a black tea drinker and don't really like the taste of coffee. When I was pregnant, I reduced my tea intake.

Is there any reputable research indicating that pregnant women should avoid coffee? It has been a few years since my last pregnancy, but I never came across any. Like a prior poster, I’m curious about why anyone would feel the need to give it up and think that the answe will inform posters who wish to respond.

NP, and just wanted to add that I've had their cinnamon black tea, and it is fantastic! A little milk in it at night and it's like a dessert (if the amount of caffeine in black tea doesn't adversely affect your sleep cycle). Excellent brand, PP.

Coffee was making me agitated so I switched to tea. Also realized I need a lot of more sugar and milk in coffee because I hate the taste. I can drink tea black but like to add a little bit of sugar or honey. Much less than for coffee.
