When to bring up planned vacation?

Anonymous
My family and ILs scheduled a week at Hilton Head in early April (yay!). I very quickly moved through a job requisition: applied on the New Year, was contacted a couple of days later, interview process took two weeks and I received an offer the following week (two weeks ago today!). I start a week from Monday.

Do I reach out to the recruiter via email now to indicate this planned trip? (I plan to take it unpaid as I’m sure I won’t have enough leave.) I go in for a pre-employment physical etc next week - do I bring it up then? Or do I wait until I am officially on the job?

Just looking when is best in your opinion. TIA!

Congrats on the new job!

You are so close that I would just wait until you start. Have fun! I love Hilton Head

You should have mentioned when you got the verbal offer so it could go in your offer letter. Not a good look.

Thanks. I'm looking for advice on what to do now.

NP - just tell them immediately. I agree with PP that it would have been better before accepting the offer but given the situation you are in - email your recruiter/HR/potential manager

+1 Hiring manager is going to be annoyed with you.

Eh, it's pretty common to have a week booked for spring break this time of year. Don't stress about it, but yes, please tell them ASAP.

NP here. Not to hijack thread but neither OP nor I nor many probably know the process for accepting a job when you have vacation plans.

When exactly do you tell new employer? Before the offer? When accepting the offer?

And do you have to say, I know it will be unpaid?

Thanks

This is OP and I feel silly. As I mentioned, it all happened so fast - and the offer came at the end of the workday on a Friday, just before an international trip I was taking Saturday. It definitely fell through the cracks.

I'm actually tempted to call rather than email. Please don't be too hard on me!

It depends on the company. Our days accrue as we work. 4 weeks (20 days) a year to start, So about 1.5 days a month. My company uses software, so if you put in the dates it would be a negative and it would probably deduct from your upcoming paycheck.

This happens all the time. I personally would ASK recruiter what you should do. But although the recruiter is in HR, they usually don’t handle this part of administration They will likely just tell you to work it out to your manager. (Now when you talk to your manager, you could say you “mentioned” it to the recruiter). Informally, the manager would likely allow you to take the days and officially log them in after they are earned.

I knew someone who got married and had a honeymoon within a few months of being hired. There wasn’t an issue, she just had to go into the red with PTO.

Oh please - people take vacations. HR will not care. Unless OP got recruited to do taxes or something.

There's nothing to be hard on you about - you've done nothing wrong! Yeah just let them know you've had this vacation scheduled for months. It'll be fine. (Unless they're horrible, in which case - )

When you are done negotiating money you say, by the way, I have a previously planned week of vacation April 1-7, would that be an issue? They will say that’s fine (IMO) and then you say, great, and verbally accept. If it’s not in official paperwork (it hasn’t been for me) I just remind my new supervisor politely in an email while expressing excitement about starting the new role.

Whether it’s paid will depend on leave policies. I haven’t asked upfront because I want the vacation no matter what.

I told as soon as I got the offer.
