When to bring up planned vacation?

Anonymous
I have an international trip booked from April 10-21. I told all 3 companies about it when they said I can expect an offer. None cared.

Thanks. I'm looking for advice on what to do now.

NP - just tell them immediately. I agree with PP that it would have been better before accepting the offer but given the situation you are in - email your recruiter/HR/potential manager

+1 Hiring manager is going to be annoyed with you.

I am a hiring manager. I would not be annoyed. You hire human beings, who are entitled to time off, not robots. I would appreciate you telling me as soon as you can though.

The one thing that might annoy your new boss is if there is some sort of planned work event that week (like a conference or trade show). It shouldn’t be a dealbreaker because they aren’t going to expect you to make a major contribution in the first month or so, but I would still flag it for your new boss.

“This slipped through the cracks, but I have a planned family vacation April 1-7. Does this conflict with major events?”

But don’t get too worried about it. It’s really common for people to have vacations and other things on the books when they start a job, especially around holidays. And if there was something mission-critical that week, they likely would have flagged it in the interview (“our trade show is April 5-7; you would be expected to sing and dance in the opening event”).

This. People are nuts. People always have vacations in the queue. I think a good time is when they call to firm up start dates and salary. Even so if after it is still fine - the issue comes in when your vacay would impact your start date.

I hire tons of people and I fully expect they will have some leave already scheduled. Just tell them the first week you start.

Don’t offer to take it unpaid. I had a similar situation where my sister’s wedding was a month after starting a new job. HR told me they could advance me my leave. It should be a nonissue if upfront about situation.

No one is saying that it’s “not done” but OP should have mentioned during the offer stage, not day 1 on the job.

This is kind of company specific.

My prior company let you go up to 10 days negative on vacation and had no probation.

My current company is strict with a 90 day probation and no unearned vacation can be used. But of course if you brought it up on offer letter phase all ok

I say 95 percent of companies ok. But if you have probation etc make sure HR knows pre start date

This is OP. I emailed the recruiter and she said to bring it up to my boss when I start and all should be well.

Thank you!
