Bad choices

Unfortunately, it seems that my daughter will have to face one of these three choices: 1) go to an expensive university she does not like.; 2) go to community college for a year and aim for transferring ASAP; or 3) just work this year and try to do better next cycle. Suggestions?

Can you provide any details? Stats? Schools? Was she rejected at all but one? What doesn't she like about it and why did she apply?

OP here. Not bad stats 3.7 uw/4.6 w
Super EC

I’d lean towards #2 (maybe she could also get a part-time job while taking a few community college classes).

Additionally, there are usually some colleges that will announce that they are still accepting applications in the spring for fall admission. Could be worth considering if other options haven’t panned out.

What happened to her targets?

Rule out option #3. She will not have a better outcome after a year of working than she will right now.

Sorry to hear about your daughter's situation. I definitely wouldn't do 1. I think 2) CC to transfer sounds like a good option. I wouldn't do 3 as it's hard to keep those academic skills up. Other possibilities: Every year there is also often a list of schools with spots left to fill that you can apply to late.

There are also a LOT of schools with a 2/1 application deadline and some with a 2/15--so if she got her act together tonight, she could apply to some more to expand her possibilities:

Good luck!

Not sure if you're in VA, but it is possible to go to NOVA and transfer to UVA for sophmore year.

I would suggest any sort of transfer over the 3rd option. At that point she's competing with the the 2025s for admissions as opposed to the transfers.

OP here again. The pain here is, as you may all know, that all this is more painful than it needs to be just because of peer pressure. In her mind, her classmates will not think highly of her if she goes to CC. Besides that, I think it is a great option....

pretty early to be throwing in the towel, but assuming you aren't waiting on any RD decisions, any interest in submitting more apps?

2/1 deadline per my recollection: Wisconsin, Michigan, Rhode Island, Wooster, Baylor, Miami of Ohio, Sewanee, Muhlenberg.

some even later. Arizona, Iowa, Ursinus etc are May 1

Community college for a year, for sure.

I just wanted to say I'm sorry and I hope it works out in a way that she is ultimately happy, even if not initially.

well, let's just call a spade a spade. nobody who has better options wants to stay home and do CC.

Why did she apply to an expensive school if she hates it?
This makes no sense.
Where are her safeties?
