Exercise ideas

When lived I out west, lived by mountains and every day got outside and hiked in summer and cross country skied every day in winter. Didn’t seem like exercise- just fun and because of it I was fit. Moved to NE city and getting heavier and unfit b/c no longer get outside (too dark to walk in AM or after work). Seems gym only choice unless I want to buy new, bigger clothes! So…. What gym equipment feels or what classes feel least like exercise and are fun? Hoping my question makes sense. I tried treadmill and I lost interest. Thanks from this new to inside “fun.”

That’s going to be tough to replicate.

Different classes appeal to different people. Consider trying a month or two of Classpass which would enable you to try a bunch of different fitness classes.

Great idea. Thank you,

There are lots of YouTube exercise videos. If you get bored with the chat, put the tv on mute and listen to a podcast.

For me it was rowing on a hydrow— it’s a little expensive but it’s what got me exercising regularly and enjoying it.

It's not exactly the same as hiking out west but can't you do local hikes or walks in nature around here? Rock Creek Park, C&O, Billy Goat, walk the Mall, Burke Lake, Sugarloaf Mtn, Seneca Park, Catoctin Mtns, Etc. etc. Look up Potomac Appalachian Trail Club or Wanderbirds for more hiking ideas.

Totally different, but my DH really loves the peloton— and if you join some groups with friends, you can make it feel like a little little bit of a community and seems a little bit fun

I can relate. Moved to DC from the PNW where my daily morning dog walks were up & around & down a cinder cone. Life is so flat here, and my fitness has suffered.

Treadmill on an incline is helpful for feeling some of that old leg strength, but it is incredibly boring. Rowing is also great for leg strength and full body (esp core if done right!), but again: boring. And, of course, vinyasa yoga. I don’t bike as much here because it just doesn’t feel as good, but it is doable.

Pp again. Sorry, I missed the “fun” part! Maybe Body Pump, Orange Theory, or Barre3. Both have decent community. Supplement with the boring things like incline on treadmill

One change I made to improve my health was to make my TV/movie time my fitness time.

I was spending 45-60 minutes each evening on the couch watching TV and streaming services (Netflix, Disney, Amazon, etc). Now, anytime I want to watch TV, I do it while on a treadmill, rower, or a recumbent bike. I just had to get some good isolating headphones. This one change, without any other diet or lifestyle changes, led me to lose 20lbs in a year.

I love boxing!

My Colorado-based daughter loves the climbing gym when she can't get out to hike, climb or snowboard.

I would figure out what options are within 10-15 minutes of either work or home and explore classes/activities within that radius first. My city had a “fitness week” last summer where a lot of different gyms/studios let you sign up for a $5 class and I did something different every day for a week. I do best in a group fitness environment and ended up joining orangetheory. it’s 10 minutes from home and on the way to my kids’ schools so it’s worked out well.
