13 MoCo high schools decline in state rankings

This is a huge problem:

You can’t blame COVID either, because these rankings are relative to every school in the state, and they clearly dealt with COVID too. This is specifically due to the way MoCo schools are being run.

Is there a list somewhere sharing the schools and their old and new rankings? Saw that story a couple of days ago and found it uninformative in that front.

They will continue to decline with weak leadership, a changing demographic, and a focus on initiatives that don't help kids learn

after looking at the metrics grouped by demographic data, it seems more a function of the county is changing demographics than its leadership.

Since 2015, the majority of public school students live in poverty. What do people expect? Sounds like government needs to do their part to reverse this or everyone will continue to be disappointed by these stats.

Changing demographics. Has had a huge effect on Montgomery County as a whole and on the public school system.

"We want to use caution in comparing this year's ratings to last year's because we know it's not an apples to apples comparison," said Raven Hill with MSDE.

Normally when an organization's leadership underperforms, they're fired.

As schools decline so will property values. W schools and BCC have now slipped from 5 star schools to 4 star schools. Why would anyone pay a premium to live in MoCo now? And they raised taxes for this disaster..

The county rolls out the carpet for illegal immigration, they're all poor, and now schools qualities decline. Totally predictable. Now people with means will flee and hasten the decline of the county.

The biggest flaw in the state rankings is that EML students end up effectively counting in multiple categories. The increasing EML population is a big impact. Yes, many EML students also qualify as FARMS, but many do not. MoCo has always been the destination for many families serving the embassies. As our diversity has grown, we attract immigrants from all around the world and their children are getting great educations. It just doesn’t get captured they way the state tracks the data.

MCPS has decided to measure success in other ways which are easier to achieve than academic performance. And it is these metrics they will continue to "improve" when it comes time to redistrict.

This.

I’ve been a kid living with food insecurity, utilities shut off, and even evictions. It is almost impossible to learn when you’re hungry or worried your family will be set out on the street that night.

Disagree.

Nothing about the schools changed, really, for people who are buying property in these zones. Sadly, actually, for white and asian kids, the scores dropping actually indicate BETTER academic experiences for them, because the scores dropped due to underperforming minorities and inequitable discrepancies (of which the sample size is small for Ws). If you're a white or asian family looking for a safe bet for your kid, these new ratings indicate the schools that dropped from 5s to 4s are better for your kid, not worse. I'm not saying this is good or fair but I am saying this will not affect property values.

Normally, organizations get to pick and choose their clients. How does a public school refuse to enroll students who are not high performers?
