I have been asked to pay to attend a home holiday party for the first time. I don’t know how different this is from splitting a bill with a group of friends.
Is this common? Maybe just new for me. |
| no way. |

No way.
Have people bring a dish and byob. |
| Nope. I'd decline the invitation. |
|
Wasn’t there a recent thread like this about Thanksgiving?
I’d decline and cross these people off my list. |
| Insane |
|
I’m a stickler for etiquette, manners and social niceties including responding to invitations, but in this case, I grant you permission to simply skip without responding to the host.
Egregious behavior doesn’t deserve a response or reply. |
I agree people are becoming so selfish and trashy |
|
I’m so glad that I am content to spend lots of time alone.
People are becoming more and more terrible. |
| What the hell? What kind of person does this? No tact. I’ve never heard of this, ever. Sure, bring a side dish and/or a bottle of wine. But not money. Sounds like they shouldn’t be throwing the party at all because they can’t afford it. |
How much are they charging? You know, so we can enjoy this thread more

+1 I need details! |
| I feel for your OP, this happened to me once and I had no idea until I showed up! I offered to pay my friend's DH through the pants as they say and they waived my fee. I've never been back. |
| My cousin and his friends did this, but it was a huge party and they would rent a venue, buy gifts for the kids, invite more than 50 people, etc. |
| I have heard of house parties and rent parties that had cover charges back in the day in urban neighborhoods. . Is it that type of thing? |
