No, shoplifting is not on the rise, nationally

In fact, it's down 7% since before Covid.

It IS a problem in a few cities, i.e. NYC and Los Angeles, and those drove the overall percentages higher.

“The overall data doesn’t indicate a great shift in the average shoplifting event, but the brazen ransacking incidents, coordinated on social media and captured on video, clearly suggest that there is a sense of lawlessness afoot, that anything goes," said CCJ President and CEO Adam Gelb. "We typically think of serious violent crimes, like mass shootings, as the offenses that spark fear and drive the politics of crime. But these mass shoplifting events have the potential to derail two decades of criminal justice reform.”

This is important information as the election looms and Fox News and RWNJs in social media forums try to persuade Aunt Edna in Des Moines and other flyover states that crime is out of control.

I live in a flyover state and travel weekly to large cities, so yeah...out of control crime in other places IS my concern.

It’s harder to shoplift. Criminals have moved on to things like stealing packages off porches, scamming people on Marketplace, etc.

Really, boo? You're going to Target in the NYC hood?

You're easily frightened, aren't you?

I saw a similar report in the NYT morning newsletter this morning but isn’t this just based on police data? But if the police are never called and no arrests are made … it won’t show up in the data. I think this problem is significantly more complicated than “shoplifting is or isn’t up.”

Yes, actually. I work in/on/near airports and military bases, which aren't known for being in great neighborhoods. I'm not easily frightened, but I did grow up in Chicago, so I AM smart about crime. Unfortunately, sometimes you just need Advil at the local "hood Target", as you put it.

Using terms like RWNJs shows a lack of intelligence and invalidates your entire point.

Hard to imagine someone trying to sell this to people.

And yet the last part about middle aged white women stealing from self-checkouts because no one suspects them is spot on.

ummm I don’t think that report comes anywhere near the “debunking” you wish it showed. the actual data shows an increase in the most concerning retail theft. for those of us who actually live or visit cities with big increases it is a problem.

Naw, it's just using shorthand to get the point across. I mean, the truth must hurt you, I guess, but you'll get over it. Or maybe you won't. We know just how much you loved to be aggrieved about things. So much persecution complex with you guys.
