running in cold weather

Anonymous
To all the runners - How do you recommend dressing for cold weather running in a place like Rochester, NY? Asking for a “friend”

Also are special sneakers needed given snow/ice that is bound to be present even on cleared sidewalks?

Thanks.

I’ve found it helps to wear trail shoes when it snows around here.

Baselayer in Merino wool or synthetic under running leggings or running shorts, and baselayer under long-sleeve running shirt, half zip with mock neck.
Gloves, hat and gaiter.

Re shoes- I didn't use traction devices but some people like yaktrax.

Dress for 15 degrees warmer than actual temp.

This. You will overheat. I run with leggings, long sleeve shirt, vest, headband, running gloves. I’m cold for the first few minutes, then fine. No special shoes, just choose a good route.

Agree with this. I usually end up removing the gloves.

I like wearing a long sleeve base layer on the top and a running jacket that zips on top. If I get hot, I unzip the jacket. Start out with gloves and if I need to take them off, they go in jacket pocket. Definitely get a good hat or ear warmer headband. Smart wool socks. And pair of fleece lines or thermal running leggings.

Don’t forget chapstick on your lips and sunscreen.

Cover your ears. Maybe this is particular to me, but when the temp drops below 55, I get terrible inner ear headaches when running.

I plan on 20 degrees warmer. So today it was 50 out and I felt perfect in a short sleeve and pants. But YMMV. I may bring light running gloves and a light headband and take them off.

You can also check out dressmyrun.com but I find they say shorts when I prefer pants and maybe a long sleeve shirt. If it says a jacket, then it's too cold for me!

I also prefer a quarter zip so I can up or down the zipper

How do people cope with breathing in freezing air? That's what I hate.

This isn’t a shocking or embarrassing question. You can ask it for yourself, not a fictional friend.

I took this as a lighthearted joke, with the quote marks and the emoji.

I breathe thru a gaiter when it’s really cold. I’ve also been know to use hand and foot warmers. If it’s icy out, then I won’t run outside. You’ll learn what your tolerance is. I think the best advice I can give is to run a route that has a way to cut it short if conditions require it. I don’t like to run out and backs when it’s super cold. You will acclimate to it, so start short and maybe repeat the route if it feels good!

40 degrees= shorts, mittens, tshirt, long sleeve tshirt and/or arm warmers
30 degrees= swap shorts for leggings, add ear warmers
20 degrees= add gator and additional top layer
10 degrees= add additional bottom layer

If it’s icy out, I wear crampons on the bottom of my sneakers
