The allure of Duke?

Anonymous
DD told me there are 5 girls applying ED to Duke in her class. I understand Duke is a great school, but it's a fairly larger percentage of her grade EDing there with all things considered. Having spoken with other parents, it seems like this is a trend at many of the local private schools in the area. Is there anything super special about Duke that's attracting a lot of early applicants this year?

No, there is zero super special about Duke.

It’s the only T10 with a decent quality of life as far as I can tell.

Yep, there are at least a half dozen applying ED in the senior class at our smallish private.
Some are legacy, some are not.

All the T10s are pretty generous with financial aid so it really depends what your situation is. But regardless there are lots of people willing to pay full and more for Duke

Duke is a good school, no doubt, and someone can get an excellent education and be supported after with a close alumni network. That being said, it appeals to a certain kind of student and the only way to know is to visit.

It is very insular and a pressure cooker, among others. Durham isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Sure the basketball team is good, but don’t count on being able to just waltz in with your student ID on game day to get in as there is a very elaborate and complicated system re student ticket distribution (more than just the UNC game require camping out).

The kids who like going to Duke usually say they just knew or felt like they were home when they visited. But you can say that about most schools when asked by those that attend. So I wouldn’t say Duke has an edge or anything more special than other schools.

This is nothing new. Duke has been hugely popular forever, even when I was applying back in the 90s (from New England).
