Being back basic skills!!!!

I'm 74 years old, and not sure what is true or not. Last time I asked my daughter question about gen Z she told me, that my granddaughter knew most of them. But why is it 90% of Gen Z don't even know how to mail a letter? They don't know people addresses or even their own address? They don't know their parents phone number.. they don't know what a check is, they don't know what a DVD is.... they don't know anything... they don't know what Monoploy game is.. they don't know even the games cops and robbers..........
I been following a mother and son on TikTok and the mom will ask the gen z 15 year old son questions he doesn't know anything......: what's going on? Parents get off your phone and start teaching them, 7 hours a day of school isn't a lot do them to learn life skills.
Also saw some articles on MSN, saying adult kids will never move out of the house. It's not strange if you're 30 and move out. 95% of 26 year old with full time jobs are living at home...::
Some of them will never work because parents will give them all the money they want. I just don't want to be in a word where people don't work anymore.....::

I was at the store at the other day and I paid the girl didn't know how to do 20.00-12.95... I had to help her count and I should've stayed in standby if she needed me but didn't have time..
I just hope when they are in their 60s they start doing something on their own because parents won't be able to provide for ever...

My daughter is 9, I'm trying to teach her basic skills:

She and a friend are learning how to hand sew. They both finished making the doll by hand from scratch and yesterday happily picked out fabrics for the doll's clothes. DD is starting to understand how clothes are made, tried to explain stitching to 4 year old brother, why trying his idea would ruin the costume.

-She knows how to make bread from scratch, but kneading with a stand mixer.

-She's learning how to raise plants from seed and care for them. Little interest so much failure. But chugging along. She's very happy to know how to "tip" raspberries. Next spring, will be responsible for care of berry bushes.

Not sure who you have been talking to, but my 14yo and 12yo know all of those things.

You don't need to teach people things they don't need to know how to do anymore.

And as far as the letter thing goes, my DH's nephew is a younger millennial and he didn't know how to address a letter. Which my boomer DH found shocking. Admittedly, I did too.

But they don't need to know about DVDs, and we don't need them to be playing "cops and robbers" (for many reasons).

Ma’am, respectfully, TikTok, MSN, etc are entertainment sources. They are going to post outrageous things to draw in viewers. Don’ t get sucked in to thinking they are Walter Cronkite.

I have teenagers. They know their own addresses & how to send letters to family members. They know their own phone numbers, and parents’ phone numbers. They know what a check is - they earn them at their part-time jobs, although they have direct deposit to their bank accounts (they did keep their first hard copy cancelled paychecks as mementos).

I will say the one thing they aren’t as familiar with is DVDs. We don’t have a DVD player, we watch all movies on Netflix/etc. Although I promise you, they can find you any movie you’d like to watch in about 20 seconds.

They are in high school & they have part-time jobs during the school year, full-time jobs during the summer. They can make change.

Please don’t believe everything you read on the internet. There is a lot of false info (& scams) out there.

The world has changed very quickly in the last 20 years. Yes, they don’t use DVDs or CDs to watch movies or listen to music - because the world has moved on to new modes of distribution. That’s like asking if they play records or cassette tapes…no, tech has moved on to the next iteration.

But they do know how to work, how to make change, how to treat people well - and above & beyond your generation & mine, they are extremely adaptable to new tech, that is a new talent that this generation owns.

It’s true that kids may not know about DVDs. They’re obsolete. They probably don’t know about floppy discs or pay phones, either.

I don’t know that you can extrapolate from that kids don’t know their own addresses, or their parents’ phone numbers. I don’t believe that’s the norm.

You seem not to know quite a lot yourself!

I've heard about this being an issue among interns or entry level employees. Don't know how to mail a letter, can't read cursive, can't do basic addition and subtraction, and in some extreme cases, can't even use a pen.

You are joking. Where TF are you getting your interns, because this is hilarious. They don’t know how to use a pen/pencil/writing tool? Are you sure they’re not unfrozen caveman lawyer?

Now we’ve reached a weird level of hysteria. I can guarantee that any 20 year old with a brain can figure out how to use this mysterious tool called a pen.

I wasn’t aware that being able to play Monopoly was a basic skill.

I don’t know how to put a horse in front of a carriage or how to crank a car from 1900.

I’m 50 and don’t know how to read a sundial — how have I possible survived?

This has to be a troll post. But if not, how did you get to be 74 and yet you don’t understand the stupidity of social media, clickbait, etc? Don’t believe everything on the internet.

You are 74 and have a TikTok account? I’m impressed. I don’t and my 74 year old father definitely doesn’t.

Mailing a letter, how to write a check are definitely things kids should learn.

How to play "cops and robbers" (which is s dumb game, actually), and monopoly aren't important. Having stated that, my 18 and 15 yr old know how to play Monopoly. They love board games. I hate them. They also know what a DVD.

The issue with the simple math problem at the cash register is not a new thing. It happened to me years ago. A woman at the till didn't know how to figure out how much 1/4" x 4 x $3 was.

IMO, financial literacy is more important than anything OP has stated, but it's not just Gen Z that needs to learn it.
