My 6th grader can’t read cursive and I forget how to write in cursive. Not knowing how to use a pen seems odd. |
| I know most kids today don’t know how to use a dustpan and broom, or operate a vacuum. |
| OK boom er |

Hey Grandma/Grandpa -- those kids are probably teaching you how to use your cell phone, helping you navigate your cable/streaming/TV, setting up your Ring camera so you can post on Next Door about the stranger danger on your front porch. They just have different skill sets.
That's not to say there aren't issues with this younger generation, but a lot of their lives were blown to bits when they had to stay home, stay isolated, learn in school over Zoom, had their activities canceled, to protect YOU from Covid. So maybe you should be thanking them and not worrying about if they can address an envelope or not. |
| Is proof reading a basic skill? |
| Do you know how to breed cattle |
| cops and robbers? Is this a basic life skill? My kids play "infection" #PandemicLife. |
Can’t read cursive? That is pretty terrible. I do consider this a basic skill, maybe not used with high frequency, but still a necessary. My 7, 12, and 14 yr old can (and do) read and write in cursive. |
Best reply!

Nah.
Equity is a more important goal anyway. |

OP, your post is incoherent.
Mind your P’s and Q’s. People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Is that how you think the dialogue should go? You deserve the “boomer” insult, and I’m sorry to say that, because I am 10 years younger than you - a young boomer and an old mom of a mid-Gen Z child, who can do plenty of things I can’t do, but we both try to learn from each other. |

Granny/troll, all of those things you list are obsolete. Nobody needs to know how to do them. It is like you are complaining that they can’t read Morse code or break ice from the lake for the icebox.
Kids can’t count money because cash is obsolete. Did you actually had a store clerk a $20 bill? It is hard to picture that. Don’t do that anymore. Everyone uses Apple Pay or credit cards now. They can’t write checks or use mail because nobody does those things either. Use Zelle or email instead and join the 21st century. The DVD was where you started to give yourself away. That’s just ludicrous, even before we get to cops and robbers and monopoly. I don’t understand how people have the time to post fake posts for strangers to respond to. |

It’s more important for kids to learn financial literacy than to learn about specific forms of payment.
Teaching kids to keep in touch with relatives is more important than what form the correspondence takes. Teaching kids the essence of good manners (making others feel comfortable and valued) will get them a lot farther than worrying about which side the fork goes on and whether to carry one handkerchief or two. If a movie is good, does it matter whether it’s on streaming, DVD, VHS, or kinetoscope? |
+1 My kids absolutely know what a check is and guess what? They know how to mobile deposit them too! Bet OP heads to the bank to do the same! |

Too many of these so-called basic skills were intertwined with the traditional nuclear family, lead by a cis-gender white male.
No thanks. |
